I have a 2012 Expedition that normally runs fine. A few weeks back after a moderately long road trip (about 360 miles) at the very end of the trip the truck started running rough and dying (the best way I would describe it is if you are driving a manual transmission and you shift too early, it almost dies, and then if you give it gas it reves way up). No gauges were out of whack, and no check engine light. Truck dies. I wait a minute and it starts up like nothing happened. I took it to my mechanic, he couldn't figure out what was wrong. Unfortunately it just happened again to my wife; it sputtered and died on the road. No check engine light, no nothing. Any ideas?

Check some basics:

Have the vehicle scanned for any stored trouble codes, even through the check-engine light is not illuminated. Some auto parts stores will scan the vehicle for free (such as AutoZone).

Is the inside of the throttle body bore and butterfly valve clean? If not, clean it with spray throttle body cleaner.

Are the battery terminal cables clean and tight, and the battery posts clean and not oxidized? If not, clean them with a battery terminal brush (note that removing the connectors may erase any stored trouble codes). Poor connections can cause intermittent electrical issues, including stalling.

Is the engine air filter clean? If not, replace it.
