Expy died on me today!

Was on my way to work out and was giving it some gas and felt it miss/sputter accompanied by wildly fluctuating air/fuel ratio?!

Then it was normal. Was then stopped at a traffic light and a bit nervous why it may have occurred but appeared ok now. Drive about a 1/4 mile down the road and all gauges light up. It stalled so I muscle a turn to get it on a side street and coasting to a stop notice I lost all fuel pressure. Try and crank once stopped and zero fuel pressure. Check the ez stuff...had no tools but fuses good. Swapped relay with wiper relay..... nothing. Impact switch is not triggered so I call AAA. Have it towed home over and hour later.... Not exactly quick service but did get it towed without incident.

At home I unplug connector at fuel pump and check for voltage while the wife initially hits the ignition. Have voltage...so stealth 340lph fuel pump decided to take a dump on me. Looks like I will waiting for new pump to arrive and then dropping the tank.

I already miss my expy!!

The nice thing was that you were able to post the problem and find the cause without a lot of foolish questions asking for instructions guidence or help. Nice to read a post like this from someone that knows what they are doing Good Luck in replacing the pump

Boo! Its uncommon for fuel pumps to go while driving. If you had full pressure and then it all of a sudden dropped and died while driving id be will to bet its the connection at the pump. You should drop your tank while your waiting for your new pump and check

I will certainly check the connections when I go to replace the pump. But I am pretty **** about making sure all connectors are tight.

I let my expy warm up earlier in the week due to extreme cold temps. I noticed as I was returning to it to leave that the pump was whining noticable. We know higher volume aftermarket pumps are louder so I just wrote it off, but the fact that it stood out to me at this particular time was likely a warning it was on its way out.

My expy had the same exact problem and my dad got it fixed for 300-400 and got a new battery. Before it completely stopped turning on, it would be 'whining'(making starting unusual noise) for a week or two. That's impressive that you can do it yourself. I wish I was that experienced with cars.

It's a lot easier than you would think. Few bolts to drop the tank down, and then a few screws to pull out the old pump. Just have to have the will to give it a shot.

SuperExpy.... you are really going to enjoy these photos..

The plug/connector supplied with the Aeromotive fuel pump failed. The ground wire was obviously loose inside and burned up the connector, some of the wire, and fuel pump connection itself. If you look carefully you can see the connector is fully seated.





What the new connector and fuel pump look like. It is a very tight fit and locks into place.



May call Aeromotive and see what they have to say...

As far as I am concerned the failure was due to faulty part they supplied. All my connections were sound and tight and I ran 30amp feeder as they recommended.

Nope... had to pump about 12 gallons out before I dropped the tank completely. Still had a few gallons left but could handle easier.

If I had planned to deal with the pump I would have run it near empty of course but unfortunately the timing wasn't up to me this time.

Thought my w.o.t. air fuel ratio had dropped from 11.6 (target) to 11.0 with the new pump.

Then viewed recent video and discovered it was the same.

Hmmm need to tweak my tune.... appears to be running a bit richer than desired in open loop. Safe but leaving some power on the table.
