feel foolish asking-oil filter

I been tinkering with my Expy for about a year, and its time for an oil change (dont get to excited, was suposed to be done when i got it). I noticed when i was working on the exhuast manifold there was an oil filter in the drivers side front fender behindthe bumper...

so.. is the a relocation kit? a extra filter for the tranny or? Looks full sized.. looks like standard oil filter to me. And yes I can crawl under and look, but havent yet (buying a house is burning alot of time up) so thouhgt I would ask here.

Anybody with ideas.. maybe thats where it is on all expy's?

for me...its better to take it off from the top...coming from underneath the truck was a pain with not having enough room to turn filter strap

clok1966, you have a remote oil filter. This was fairly standard on the 4x4 trucks and the Eddie Bauers. But, not all Expy's have this. I do not recall what the motivating fact was (seems to me it was only with the vehicles that had the "heavy duty package" option which gave you an oil cooler too - which is completely worthless when you see how it works).

I actualy removed the remote oil filter off of my truck to make things a bit cleaner. Granted, I have a lift, so, accessing the oil filter is cake now. Do not even need tools to do an oil change. Just need my 5 gallon gas can and a small catch tray. Whooo hooooo.

so your saying just pulling the filter is enough to draing the system, no oil plug? That would be nice. Oil change in as long as it takes to drain.

you will need to undo the plug underneath from the oil pan to drain the old oil...you will also take off the oil filter to drain the oil there and replace with new filter that will screw back on...hand tighten the oil filter and the pressure will seal it...put the drain in by hand and tighten by wrench...DO NOT USE IMPACT WRENCH

that is all

When i do an oil change now with my truck, I slide the 5 gallon can under the truck (mine is lifted, so it fits), I pull a tube out of the glove box, I remove a cap off of the new valve I have installed where the oil drain plug was located. I screw this tube into the valve and I put the other end of the tube right into the gas can. Wha-la. The oil drains out of the motor directly into the gas can. From there, once the oil is all drained out, I remove the tube and put the cap back on. I slide the catch tray over to the oil filter, reach up, spin of the oil filter by hand, letting what oil may drip fall on to the catch tray and then I spin a new filter on. easy as that. Add in the necessary oil and all is done.

I had to convert over to the check valve setup because my lift put a cross member right under the oil drain. So, when I would go to drain my oil, the oil leaving the pan would hit a round pipe and go everywhere. For $15, it was money well spent. Makes like much easier. Just have to be a little more patient when draining the oil as it does slow it down a little bit due to restrictions. But, I am normally running over other parts of the truck as this is happening, so, no real loss of time on my end.

What I have is similar to this:

No Spill Engine, Oil and Fluid Drain Plug & Valve System - No-Spill™ Systems

The check valve replaces your drain plug. So, you have 2 barriers between the oil and the environment. You remove the cap, screw on the tube and the oil drains out. Very slick. It was a popular product about 10 years ago, but I haven't seen them recently. There are some companies offering a simple 90 degree valve that you can screw into the drain hole. Then all you would have to do is find a cap for the one end to prevent inadvertent draining of your oil. A product I found is:
QuickOilDrainValve.com

I will see if I can find any pictures of it. I have did a quick look on the internet and there are none like what I have (the first link is essentially what I have). I paid like $15 for it about 10 years ago. It has been money well spent.
