My 2010 expedition started losing paint off of aluminum parts in ~3-4 years. The paint warranty only covers perforation and my dealer told me to pound sand.

Now I have ordered a new 2023 SPP, so I have a question and an observation.

Has Ford improved their Aluminum painting process?

I noticed that the new paint warranty explicitly says that aluminum parts do not require perforation to be covered! I am not sure if this means they fixed the problem, or are just more willing to fix problems.

Thanks in advance.

We have had zero problems with our paint on both our 2014 GT500 and 2020 Raptor. Good luck!

The last gen expy seem to bubble around the back hatch wiper. Haven't seen any 2018 up with that issue yet but its still early. Hope they fixed it. Its a lot easier to fix then rust but still a pain.

I’ve had a 2015 F150 (1st year of full aluminum body) that I bought new, and have had zero paint and body corrosion issues. It’s lived through 7 Michigan winters where they don’t spare with the chemicals on the road. The steel underneath looks typical for a Michigan vehicle, but the body’s great.

I just had to repair my rear hatch and will have to do the hood soon. I'm not confident they have the problem solved, based on some recent class action lawsuits.

Well, at least they updated to paint/corrosion warranty to not require perforation.

Last time I let it go. If my new expy has problems and they refuse to stand by it I will be the dealer's and ford's worst legal nightmare.

For > $86,000 I think expecting the paint to stick is pretty reasonable.

Here by the seashore, the salt is causing lots of problems with the F-150 paint. There are many trucks less than five years old with substantial paint bubbling. Seems that the oxidation begins on the edges where the paint is not very thick and travels further into the panel, as it did on the leading edge of Expedition hoods.

Not sure if anything can be done about this at least under harsh salt conditions. I suppose that as soon as the warranty's up the problem is on you.

~Two years ago I had finally given in and fixed my hood on a 2014 Ford Explorer. Around here in Michigan you see quite a few Explorers with hoods that are bubbling/peeling. My dad had issues for years on a 2014 Mustang. He had the hood repainted 3 times and it never held. I will say my Explorer hood was still good after being repainted for about 16 months before we just sold it.

The proper primer for aluminum is zinc-chromate based, which the EPA attacked years ago. Companies are forced to use sub-standard primers as a result.

I had a 2009 Expedition where the paint started to blister on the tailgate. The dealer repaired under warranty despite be a month over the time limit. I also had a 2014 but this time both the hood and tailgate blistered. Ford reluctantly agreed to shoulder some of the cost but wanted to installed new parts. The total cost Cdn$6500. Split 40% Ford, 20% Dealer and 20% myself. Not a “happy camper” to say the least especially when FORD knew about the paint issue going back at least 5 years. I was so “p$%&” at Ford that I bought a 2020 Toyota Sequoia Platinum but disliked it enough to go back to Ford. Now have a 2021 Expedition King Ranch Max. Fingers Crossed.

The paint was just as terrible on my BLACK 2010 Expy. Rear hatch and hood bubbled and peeled and Ford told me to pound sand.
