Hello. I have a 99 expy 4x4, 5.4 with 145k. I noticed a clunking sound when you come to a stop or accelerate from a stop. It isn't the balljoints, as all four front ones have been chenged within the last month. my mechanic hears it too and assures me the front end is fine. I was thinking body mounts maybe?

How do you check/change body mounts or what else should I be looking for?

Thanks for your help.

I would have said balljoint but if they are new then I don't know?
Are shock rubbers all good and not worn or lose?
Are all the stabilizer end links good no broken bolts
Sway bar rubber mounts?
As for body mounts you could jack the body up to see if any body mounts pull away, but I can't belive it would be a problem.
I'd be interested to see what the problem turns out to be :smiley-face-popcorn

If the front end is fine (have you had the alignment checked lately?) and nothing seems loose, I'd be checking the sway bar end links and/or the rubber mounts for the sway bar as mentioned above.

I have been told, on another forum, that it could be the tires as i have a similar problem and its intermittent. Since mines a 00 A4wd if the tires have uneven wear then it throws a kink in the system, not sure of the truth of this but I'm leaning more towards a wheel bearing/hub assembly.

Pulling in 4hi? Could it be because your adding power to the front wheels and that extra traction is making the truck pull?
Mine doesn't do that hahaha
And I just put a hub on my drivers side, the passenger side wasn't bad, but thats where my noise is coming from. Mine sounds more like when you hit a small bump, and I have no idea where the hell its coming from. Could it be because my torsion keys are cranked?

And the winner is Slednecks with hung up caliper. The caliper guide pin was the culprit.
Thanks to all who replied. You guys are the best!

mine made the clunk as well and i looked and couldnt find anything visibly loose. It happened as soon as it got cold so i am thinking it was the temp change. I had rebuilt all the brakes, new ball joints and alignment so i can throw that stuff out. I checked teh drive line as well because i heard a clunk in the back as well but now the clunk went away. Dont know what that was all about?

I have a similar Clunk on my 99 Expy 4x4 with 150K. It only does it when accelerating and only if I gun it. If I'm smooth on the accelerator no Clunk? Any Ideas, how do you check for a hanging caliper, and fix it if it's hung?
