I've been chasing a funny noise for the past week or so. It starts when I am driving at or above 70 mph or when using cruise control on the highway and the cruise control "coasts" going down a hill. It sounds like a loud hum - VVVVVVMMMMM. I can't feel it in the steering or the pedal for the most part.

I checked the wheel bearings - they appear good. Added 1qt of oil to the front differential, the brakes are good, the tires are balanced and I just had an alignment done as well.

any other ideas of where to look?

It's a 1997 5.4L 4x4 with 119K miles.

I've got the same issue, just started about 2 weeks ago.

I grabbed the front axle and shook it - no play there.

I may just go ahead and replace the front axle bearings but I would hate to do it prematurely.
