Preface, it used to always read full, I replaced the sending unit

I'd given up until now

I pulled the airfilter, a kn Cai style . It had slip down and started rubbing the two connectors, well one had about 18 or so wires and they where all either rubbed through and broken or bare wire.

So I pulled the pins one at a time and soldered the wires back together, one of which I notices was the yel/white wire for the fuel gauge

After I got done the fuel gauge read dead empty, fuel light and all. So for giggles I went and put about 7 gals in it, but it still read empty

And did not change on the way home
Ideas?

The bare wire could have caused a short in the cluster.

Try unhooking the battery, turn the lights on, cycle the key, than hook it back up.. May just need a reset. make sure you watch your gauge on first start up it should flip to "F" and back down to "E" till its started. ( The whole cluster will do this ) but if it does not do that, I would say its a short

Check it when its out next time. Its super easy to put the float/sending unit on upside down. FOr this reason i mark the top of them when i take em out with whiteout.
