Gas mileage ?

So we bought a '15 expoy limited with 42k on it. Had it about 2 months now.
The mileage is only running about 16/17 by the computer.
Shouldn't it be around 20?
We live in a flat land area no hills don't pull anything and driving habits are normal. My wife drives it mostly and she's light foooted for the most part.
We had an 07 epoxy EB with 5.4 previously that was getting about the same mileage.
Just thought it would be getting into the 20s with the ecoboost. Thanks for your input guys.

I get average 15.5 MPG as of lately with mostly city driving. If I do a lot of highway I can do 17-18 MPG range with the 5.4. I think the ecoboost is rated at 1MPG better so your doing OK with those readings city.

Its a 3 ton behemoth with no aerodynamics. Anything between 15-20 mpg is what you should expect. Put the same engine in a smaller, lighter vehicle and the mileage will go way up.

I owned 2- 5.4's before this 3.5 and for the same driving my 5.4's gave me 11-12mpg, the 3.5 currently gives me 15/16. Also for the same driving that the 5.4's netted 14mpg, the 3.5 is currently giving me 18mpg. Right around 15 thousand miles, the gas mileage increased noticeably. Not like 2-3mpg but more like .4-.6 mpg...just a sign of breaking in that used to happen at 1200-1500 miles<LOL> and THAT's a sign of some tight engine engineering!

Jeff you are forgetting one key thing... Ford switched to a six speed from the four speed transmission that was originally coupled to the 5.4 when the 3rd gen came out. Naturally with two more speeds it increased fuel economy pretty well on the V8. Coming from an 07 he wouldn't see nearly as much difference as coming from a 2nd gen with the four speed. This is a 6,000 pound hunk of steel these motors have to push around all day after all it's not like we are in mini coopers hahaha.

I went from an 07 5.4/6speed to a 15 EL. Both have the HD tow package and 3.73 gears. Both are 4wd. The 07 averaged mid 14mpg with the best of 17. The 15 is averaging mid 16s with the best of 19. 20+mpg with the Expedition will probably only be a 2wd on a long flat trip. Every time you accelerate the turbos stuff more air and you use more gas. That includes up hills.

16/17 is normal. 21 mpg will be a bit difficult to achieve, unless you're being more conservative on your driving (as in driving 40, in the top gear, no AC, etc.). I'm running 11/12 on my '13. Thank God for cheap gas. If you're doing mainly city driving and getting 16/17, then you're fine.

Nope, not forgetting anything at all, just stating facts of what I got with both of my 5.4's, but it does sound like the 5.4/6spd returns about the same mileage as the 3.5 does, maybe a little less. That paradigm(on # of gears ) would suggest that the new 10spd should ratchet the mileage up even higher but I'm not sure that it does by much.

20MPG in "Fat Boy" (formerly known as "Moby Dick") is absolutely best case scenario driving only. My wife can touch 20 at times but only briefly. I didn't know 20 MPG existed until she drove it.

I'd agree with DF5.4 I bet you could achieve better mileage in a 2WD version as you'd have less weight and no front pumpkin/ front driveshaft/ CV axles to push around. I'd bet the 10 speed will increase fuel efficiency further. however you can only make these so MPG friendly after all. At the end of the day they have to haul and work.

When you are in 2WD your front wheels free wheel and the axles and the transfer case do not turn because the hubs are disengaged, just like the F150s. But you do have all of the extra weight to push around.

Best I've gotten on an 8 hour drive at highway speed 78 MPH is 17.3 I've seen spot mileage higher than that but I wouldn't consider that. My combined mileage over 1230.3 miles 1100 of which was highway, I averaged 16.3 for the trip. I only have 4800 miles on mine right now.

I'm getting 17.3 in my 08 and average near 65mph. Here in AZ. My 04 got 17 but I did some mods. Rfmoved rear cats and intake mods.

I believe it is all in the right foot.

I had a 3.5 eco f150 and never got better than 17. Then it died at3K miles and traded it for a 5.0. Got 20 mpg in the 5.0. Then pushed out another kid and got the expedition.

It's all about the driver. When I do more dimple mods to my 08 I expect more mpg in return.

The last few months of driving both on and off road with the AC running, I have averaged 17/18 mpg. I did a 2000 mile road trip this spring in SW USA and averaged 19.3 mph, mostly without the AC running. I would expect the OP to get better than what he is getting.

Several months ago, I started using the Fuelly app. You enter your odometer reading and gallons put in every time you fill up. As of now, I have tracked 26 fill-ups and have an average mpg of 15.3. this includes a 3,000+ mile trip a few weeks ago, and smaller trips here and there, as well as normal local driving.

I'm averagering about 14 litres / 100 km. I'll save you the math, it's about 17 mpg. Mainly highway driving.
