If I were here, you would know it !
The reason I ask is that I have been randomly testing the process by pouring those last few drops (or 27.859) of gas into a gas can & noting how much was left in the hose where it dips down below the level of the filler opening...

I have gotten anywhere from 3oz all the way to 19.5oz per fill up

No, I did not use any "scientific" methodology or what not, or test at specific times of the day/week/month or at any particular station...

And yea, I understand that in the bigger picture of things, even 19.5oz isn't really that much, especially for our favorite truck that holds 25-35 GALLONS, but I'm just curious what other folks do or if anyone really cares...

19.5oz? Huh? I am lucky getting 3 drops! Not sure what’s going on down there?! Here is no such thing than getting free gas, since the government would make less money.
Our pump come on as soon as the pressure inside the hose is lost and thus counts the amount of gas pumped. The only thing you get, is whatever is in the nozzle past the trigger.

Oops, that was a typo...should have been "point" 3-9 (.3 to .95oz), sorry about that. my bad :D

But anyways, it's still not "free" gas, since it's in the slump in the hose and has already been counted towards the amount you will pay...

I was hoping it was a typo, it doesn’t make any sense otherwise. 0.3oz I am buying that. Well kinda free gas… (pay it forward). Lol
With these 0.3oz of extra gas, I couldn’t even start my lawnmower.

So, 19.5 oz is left in the hose that the pump metered out for you, but you didn't get.

The same thing happened to the guy, or gal, or human, who used the pump before you. You got his/her's/it's 19.5 oz. And, now, you want to empty the hose and not leave any for the next person. That's not very fair to your fellow gas pumpers. Leave that 19.5 oz in the hose and feel good about what you are doing for the human race!

I leave my "hose gas" for the next guy. I figure it's only fair since I got the previous guy's "hose gas" when I filled up.

I just try to shake off what is in the nozzle so it doesn't drip down the side of my vehicles. Yet, there is always that one drop that gets by and hits the side.
Dammit.

Try tilting the handle down as you withdraw your nozzle from the orifice. That will keep any fluid remaining in the nozzle from dripping out. This takes practice--It's all in the wrist.
