But my question is, is it actually "insulated glass"? Or is it just thick single glass? The reason the factory went to insulated glass was for noise reduction. They gave up durability to gain comfort. I'm not sure what's better, but thats why the new windshields break so easily as its 2 thin pieces of glass laminated together with an air gap in between the layers.. Cars 5-10 years old rarely break the glass because they didn't have this fancy insulated noise reduction glass in them.
My wife has broken 4 windshields on her Ford Flex in the last 3-4 years, its really getting annoying. She never broke a windshield in 20 years before this flex with insulated glass AND these stupid pea-gravel-tar roads now with all the tiny stones.
Yup, the same as folks that don’t get insurance replacements at no deductible hahahahahaIt's not free
It's pre-paid
Ford has been using insulated sound screen glass standard since the 2006 MY for the Expedition....there was no switching to insulated glass, recently anyway lol.
This is my first expedition, so excuse me. I wasn't a Ford man until recent few years. I like older vehicles as I can repair them myself, so I haven't been up on these newer electronic nightmares.
I think the electronics make it easier to diagnose but I’m used to messing around with jets that have systems on top of systems. The problem is the manufacturer making it hard for a third party shadetree to easily/cheaply figure out what’s going on without the proprietary software and such.
Yeah, but eventually OEM glass begins to look like someone sandblasted it after alot of highway miles even if it's not technically cracked or chipped bad enough for insurance replacement
According to this article; https://www.foxnews.com/auto/gorilla-glass-ford-f-series-windshield , the exterior layer (of three) is convention soda lime glass.
The “gorilla glass” layer is sandwiched in the middle, to make the windshield five times stronger than a conventional windshield.
I don’t think this new windshield will help the damage and sand-blasting caused by rocks and small debris.

Luckily I haven’t had to try it, but I think that the windshield is supposed to be able to pop out by kicking it from the inside and out of the way so that you aren’t climbing through the windshield itself, just the opening.Makes you wonder what the point of the new design is then if it doesn't prevent chips and cracks better than a normal windshield. A super strong windshield will also make it more difficult to get out from the inside in an entrapment/accident situation, but maybe it will help keep a deer from coming through the windshield.
