I got the build sheet from the dealership on the 2006 I may purchase tomorrow. No limited slip, can that be added? The discrepancy is the owner said it does have Control Trac (or advance trac) but the build sheet says “less stability control”. The owner said he was reading straight from the window sticker. Any thoughts?

If anyone wants to see the build sheet send me your email. I wouldn’t mind some people looking it over to see if I am missing any key features.

Thanks,
Rob

Might be wrong here, but if it has AdvanveTrac, then a LS isn't possible. The AdvanceTrac relies on electronic sensors to cut power to the slipping wheels. A LS is a mechanical component and wouldn't work with the electronics. My 08 has AdanceTrac w/RSC and only has the regular 3.73 axle. What has me confused is the "less stability control". I thought it was a package deal.

Correct in saying the LS is not possible when you have Advance Trac. When I ordered my 2002 Explorer I checked off LS and Advance Trac. When it came in without the LS I questioned the dealer and found out it has to be deleted when the Advance Trac is optioned.
I would make sure when you go to look at it or get it that the window sticker matches the VIN. If it does, I would go by that to determine what exactly it has. The Adv. Trac will also have the button on the center console, and the badging on the rear tailgate saying it has it.

Don't know how the AdvanceTrac works on an 06, I'd assume the same way as mine, but a single button push disables the system momentarily. Pressing and holding it in for a couple seconds, shuts it off further. Now the only problem with it and I haven't found a way around it yet, if you break the 20-25 mph threshold, the system automatically re-engages. Stupid electronic gadgets...

I look at a picture of the back of the 06 and do not see the badge. Its a crappy pic so it may be cut out.

If I remember the system correctly, it looks at the wheel speed sensors for each wheel and when it senses a wheel slipping, it applies just the brake caliper to the slipping wheel. The added drag on the wheel will cause it to slow down, restoring its ability to grip and provide traction. Nothing really spectacular about it.

As for having LS or Advance-Trac, give me LS any day. But then, I am a mechanical kind of guy when it comes to stuff like this. THe LS doesn't rob power (by applying the brake), it simply shifts the power to the wheel with traction. Also, the LS will tend to tell you that you are nearing your traction limit by a slight shudder in the truck (as long as you pay attention to what the truck is telling you). If you ease up on the gas just a little bit, you will pull through a lot of things. You give the truck a little more gas and well, the rear bumper is going to be leading the way.

So, if you are wanting non-thinking driving experience, then Advance-Trac is the only way to go. But, if you like to interact with your vehicle, LS is the better option.

I would rather have the LS for myself. Advance Trac may be good for the wife.

Can a LS be installed if its not already?

Rob, if you don't have the Advance-Trac, then yes, you can install an LS unit. They run about $700 plus install. Install takes about 2-3 hours, so, plan on another $200 or so to have a shop install it.

Well no expy for me yet. We are going to keep searching. May start looking at the 3rd gen too.

It did have Control Trac 4x4 listed on the window sticker but no button to turn it off and no badge. It had the bubble thing going on inside the rear hatch where Ford did not prep the alum good enough before paint.
