Hi guys,
I bought a Used 2018 XLT with 33000 miles on Friday evening. I went to start the vehicle with the remote start and I got a grinding/rattle for first 1-3 secs. Did it again the next morning. its my first Ecoboost. I had a F-150 5.0 a few year back, and didn't make this noise during startup. anyways, it doesn't sound normal...car going back to fix a frayed seatbelt I missed during delivery, so I'll mention to it to them, but wanted to ask and see if anyone had same issue and how it was fixed.
Anyways, got two videos from Sat and Sun morning. I'll record again tomorrow morning before heading to dealer. It only does it after sitting around overnight.
thank you!

Yikes!! That sure sounds bad to me. Are you sure it's full of oil? I would take it to the dealer immediately. Mine is quiet on startup.

Cam phasers. Well documented issue on The new f150s. Unfortunately all they do is give new new factory ones but the problem will keep returning until ford decides to upgrade them. Thts no good there, needs to go in tomorrow

Might also be an oil issue

Cam phasers... mine sounds exactly the same. It’s been doing it since 10k on mine (now at 25k). I haven’t taken mine in as there isn’t a true fix yet. They will probably replace the phasers but on the f150 forums the sound just comes back. The phasers need oil and it has to build pressure to get it up there after it’s been sitting overnight.

If you hold the gas pedal to the floor when you start it and let it crank a few seconds then let off there is no sound on mine so it seems an oiling issue.

Let us know what the dealer does and if it fixes it.

Is it dangerous? Will it lead to engine failure at some point? They have a black one exactly like mine for the exact price, so I’m taking in tomorrow to talk to the dealer, and I’m 50/50 on asking them to return it.
I know I bought a used vehicle, so it’s not perfect, but this is not the way I was expecting to start my week...taking it right back to dealer.

If it’s certified pre owned then someone messed up. I would not drive it with those cam phasers making that noise. If I were you, I’d eirher take it up there and definitely show a technician that video. Not a service advisor, ask for shop manager or an actual technician. If they are any good they will know that’s a slack phaser issue. If they fix it, you’ll be fine. If not, since you got it Friday fell em you wanna eirher return it or swap for other one. Don’t let em push you around. Also, if they say they need to hear it in person, let em keep it overnight and go up there tomorrow morning and start it up WITH THEM. Your video should be evidence enough

Has the oil ever been changed? And is there still much of it left?

Either that...or cam phasers.

PS or hey, maybe all of the above

See my posts .. if you dare :)

bummer I had mine 10 days and had to get a transmission overhaul. Bought it with 30k on it.

Thats how things go sometimes :)

Jeebus, how widespread is this issue? The more I'm reading on this forum, the more I'm wondering about my recent purchase. I love the looks, the ride, and gizmos... but if Ford cannot make a solid power plant and transmission, the rest isn't worth a shit. This issue sound like it dates back to the 5.4 Triton... what's up with Ford's Engineering group? If it is largely due to timing chain stretch, re-design the chain and material properties to resolve it. With these type basic engineering issues plaguing the fleet, I'm actually amazed they are selling so well. Really disheartening.

It’s relatively widespread. more-so with the new f150s. But y’all share the same gen2 motor so it’s bound to be an issue for both sides

Plenty of gen 1 EcoBoosts have had timing set woes too, they are notorious for losing the timing chain and clacking away. I own a 5.4 3V, another engine notorious for clacking away. Keep them maintained and you are usually ok.

I've had the same thoughts - these issues were known and should have been addressed. It seems chronic. What the vehicle offers as a total package is great but the amount off issues surpasses any previous vehicles I have owned and the list contains some serious crappy ones. I am probably an outlier but still.

I won't talk anyone out of buying an Expi. but you have to get an extended warranty bumper to bumper (Premium) or this vehicle is going to drain your bank account. Silver lining for me is that my ext warranty has covered everything after 36K miles.

Yeah and the only issue now is that they don’t have an “upgraded” fix, they just put on a factory new set and it sorta just prolongs the issue

Well...Hahaha...first thing I’m told it is the A/C and I need to turn it off every time I turn the car off. Took everything in me not to drop to the ground laughing. I requested to speak to manager and he listen to my daily videos of my startup and agreed there’s an issue and will talk to the techs to double check what it thinks it is...anyways, mine is a 4WD and the other ones in lot are not or they are the one color we aren’t willing to accept. Really like it, so I told them to give 24 hrs and will give them a final answer about returning it.

it's certified pre-owned, so I'm only going with that as the warranty. I bought it in a small town outside of San Antonio, call Devine.
