We will begin our serious hunt for a 05-06 in about a week. I plan to search out of state too. What's the best way to tell if one has the HD tow package. Most dealers and owners have no clue. All they can tell me is it has a tow hitch.

When in doubt, run the VIN. I would like to say "usually" if you find the 3.73 rear it's gonna have the HD trailer package. Problem to that, owners/dealers aren't gonna know that either.

Rob, Look up the Expedition NBX edition. That what my 05 is and I believe the Heavy Towing package is standard on the NBX. As well as skid plates and upgraded shocks. My hitch has the receiver, as well as the 4 pin plug and the 7? pin round plug built into it.

The factory heavy duty towing should have both types of connectors I believe.

The 7 pin connector is added with the HD tow package. If it only has the 4 pin it's the standard tow package.

Cool! I will look for the 7 pin. Thanks for the pics. Looks like I will officially start shopping tuesday. The Mustang gets picked up Monday and its new home is in Tampa.

All Expeditions sold in Norway have HD trailer package. My truck has skid plates, 2 plugs and HD rear coil springs. Dont know about gears though

If I find an Expedition that has everything we want but does not have the HD tow package would it be worth it to upgrade? HD tow has 3:73, bigger rad and tranny cooler, anything else? I should mention I don't tow anything at this time but may tow a ski boat in the future.

It depends on the size of what your towing. The most important thing would be the tranny cooler

Piece of advice I live by...better to have and not need than need and not have! If you plan a ski boat of any size(21 ft+) you'll be glad you have it. When I'm hitched to my 22 ft Chaparral there's an extra 6000 lbs back there.

Yes, it is pre-wired for a trailer brake controller which will be essential for stopping heavier loads. You will have to purchase and install the controller.

I found 2006 with the HD tow package. I hope to pick it up this weekend if all checks out. Do all HD tow packages come with Air Suspension?

Expensive to fix and a pain to fix az well. I had air ride on my Lincoln mark vii. When it worked, it was beautiful. When it broke it was horrible. The only way I would do air again is new with extended warranty or custom after market without all the sensors and quality parts.
