Hello all

I thought I would post to get insight on the reasons why one would completely segregate the heating system from the rest of the vehicle...

This was done, by guessing, with a handsaw. I didn't see this when the truck was purchased. The heater hoses ate clean cut and sealed with an end cap.

Well if the core was plugged up, maybe they did not want the debris making it back into the coolant that cools the engine? Not really sure though. It depends where it was cut at, but it would not be the first time I have seen that.

Most likely leaking heater core, front one in the dash would be my guess or the lines rusted through somewhwre for the rear heat. Both common problems. People do this because its about an 8-10 hour job to replace on your own or an 800 dollar bill from a garage to have it replaced. It requires complete removal of the dash for the core or very expesive lines if they rust through. Pre-90's that used to give to an access panel under the hood. Remove two bolts take the cover off and done. Then some engineer somewhere got the bright idea to take the heater core and build the entire car around it and so they're all made this way now. Sometimes you can get by for a while with some bars leaks or the like but it's only a temporary fix for a small leak.

That would be my guess as well.

Heater core probably pooped out. Try hooking them back up and cross your fingers its not leaking. The heater core is not too bad to change. Tedious and long yes. But not hard. Taking my time with lotsa taking breaks to do other stuff around the house it only took me about 6 hours
