Hello, Im new and need help

So I haven't picked up the expedition yet but I was wondering what to look for. It is a 1999 XLT 4x4 what is the best motor size, Problems, spots to look at, things too look out for?

I hate to sell my car but I need something bigger then my 2door toy.

Hello, I have a 99 expedition with the 4.6 and almost 170,000 miles. As far as the engines, there is the 4.6 and 5.4 They are both smooth running motors and will last you plenty long enough with proper maintenance. If you have a choice between the 2, I would lean towards a 5.4. Not only for the extra power, but most expeditions with the 5.4 have a bigger trans and rear axle. I have had my rear axle go out, but other than that, no big problems, she purrs like a kitten. The 5.4 is a very good motor, but due to the new aluminum heads, they have been known to give problems when replacing the spark plugs. The first year 5.4s are known to blow out the spark plug when replaced, but there is a company that makes replacement threads for this, and is not a very hard fix. I would not let this scare you off, because other than that possibility, Expeditions are very reliable vehicles.

A 4x4 with either engine will get about the same mpg. It is worth just getting the larger engine. You will appreciate all of the extra hp and torque. If you get one with the factory tow package you will have a pretty bulletproof set up too.

If you know the vehicle has had regular maintenance, then there isn't much to look for. These trucks are very reliable. I would look out for rust, though. Particularly on such an old truck. They are prone to rust at the bottom of the doors, rear quarter panels, radiator support...not sure where else.

2000 Expedition

I have a 2000 Expedition that i have owned since 2005. It's a 2WD XLT with a 5.4L. I bought the truck with 45K miles and it now has 148K and still running strong. With regular maintenance the 5.4L engine and drive-train have been bulletproof.

I did pick-up a miss in the engine a few weeks ago and the problem persisted. Went to Advance Auto for a free diagnostic and found that the #2 Coil was missing. I ordered (8) new coils from Global on e-bay ($80 w/ free shipping) and installed them this past weekend.
While doing the coil install, I noticed oil was collecting in the #8 plug hole so i also changed out the valve cover gasket.

The Expedition now running strong as ever!

If the person that you are buying from has some good records for maintaining the vehicle, and the price is right, you can't go wrong.

I've had my 1997 Expedition for over 10 yrs now. Love it. Replaced the spark plugs a couple of times which can be more a test of patience than anything else. 180,000 plus, miles. Thru the years I've ended up replacing all of the 4 passenger side coils which are on top of each spark plug. Left side coils are still good. Don't know why it happens that way, maybe more heat on the right side due to the heater lines etc. I plan to keep it at least a couple more years.

99 Expedition

I have a 99 Expo. I know first hand about the blown spark plug issue. Unless you have the tools to replace on your own, it can cost a pretty penny. I had just gotten back into town from a trip to Vegas and about 2 miles from home, I blew the 3rd plug back on the passengar side. Of course, you have to replace the coil (48 bucks at autozone) and the plug and the threads. Yay. But yes, they do make a kit for this issue. Other than that, I have the 5.4L, 4X4, 157,000 miles and no other issues to report. She is a great truck.
