Hole in differential

replacing the pinion seal on my ‘00 expy with the 9.75 ring gear 3.55 limited slip rear axle. Upon inspection after removing the seal we found a chunk that appears to be missing but does not go through to the outside of the case.
Are we screwed? I’m assuming this is not normal and shouldn’t be there.

Doesn't look good. It's possible you or someone could make the missing hunk, and weld it in. Might want to stop by your closest Ford parts dept, and ask to print a pic of that part/area. If you have a trans shop that deals with differentials show them the pic.
