Does anyone know if it is possible, and if so, how to remove the roof racks from an 01. I tried this the other day and slid them all the way back and at the rear of the vehicle on the rails there is a tab that I pressed down to get the start of the cross bar off, but it would not let me take it all the way off. Anyone know how to do this? I will try to post some pictures tomorrow when it is light out, but if you guys have dealt with this please let me know how to get them off.

bump.

I was thinking about doing this so I can get clearance to fit my beast into the garage this winter. Looks like the roof rack is the only thing holding me back. I havent tried to take them off yet. Has anyone done this to a 1st Gen? How did you waterproof after removing the racks? Just reinsert the screws that were removed? Is there an alternative?

Thanks,

T

its pretty easy to slide off the cross bars off i think there is a thing you push down on the back of the guide rails and they slide right off

I removed my rack and it isnt hard at all. There is little push down things at the back. I left the track on the Expy, so i didnt have to worrie about water leaking in.

Thanks for the advice, it didnt give me too much trouble. I was able to take the cross bars off, all for naught though. Still couldnt fit in the garage. Im in a rental and it looks like the landlord hood-rigged the entry way to the garge, I see at least 3 inserted boards. Only other option is to lower the expy an inch or so to get in.

I did this a year ago on my '01. I didn't need to "plug" or put back screws, there are threaded anchors in the roof. Unless you yank out the achors I dont see any water issues, Again; its been about a year and no problems.

The truck has a power moonroof and roof air throughout to the third row, if it was leaking I'd know about it LOL.
