Chuck, be glad she doesn't go to one of those surplus stores. They have cans with no labels. You don't know if your opening peaches or green beans!

There's a philosophy of buying newer vs. older vehicles. It's a personal preference. Money to burn? Buy new. Otherwise, after a couple of years' of silly depreciation, you usually get similar "dollars per year" use out of a car regardless of the age. Of course the older you buy, the more risk and the more repairs. You can mitigate some of that risk with a warranty. Newer means higher insurance.

If you find a well maintained car that's not at the end of its useful life, you'll probably do fine in either case. I've always driven high end Fords and always have had them on the road taking me on interstate jaunts up to 250,000 miles. But I've done work on them. This has freed up money to invest, so I was ably to retire quite early.

It's all about choices. These are good trucks. Just find one that's not too old, hasn't been abused and has seen regular service.

Severa! folks raised the question type of trailer used and load. I reread your initial post and see where you're going to transport horses, ergo horsetrailer! Is it a 2 horse or 3 horse slant, conventional side by side? Has a lot to do with weight and don't forget the weight of each horse! All that said and done i would strongly recommend a F350 Super Duty with the 6.7 Powerstroke diesel and 3:73 gears. I just completed a trip of the States, 13,000 miles pulling a 31' Airstream with no effort at all crossing multiple mountain ranges. To get back to subject matter i also pull a 3 horse slant trailer and own 2 Expeditions, 97 & 11. I wouldn't even think about putting that kind of weight (hitch or gross) on the Expeditions. Get the right tool for the job and you'll be rewarded for your thought process. One last thing to consider is stopping power. Even with correctly adjusted trailer brakes bringing 9000 pounds to a very quick stop especially when you now have a lot of extra weight behind you can be a little exciting. Being "pushed" through turns or sudden stops can be a little unnerving. Best of luck to you!

If you are currently pulling that load with a Trailblazer V6 an Expedition with the 5.4L and 3.73s will pull like a freight train in comparison. Same goes for the ecoboost obviously.

Going back to post #5, Muffy said, "Thank you- I know I'm on the edge with the tow weight, and I'm weighing both the truck and the trailer. "

Muffy, is the weight of the Expy AND the loaded trailer 9,000 lbs?

Maybe I'm not understanding what you meant, but if that is the case the Expy will be just great. I pulled a 2 horse Kingston trailer with 2 Quarterhorses with my last Expy(2011) with no problems.

If the loaded trailer alone is 9k, I agree, bigger would be better.

Two 2017 F150s pulling 9000 pound trailers up and back down the famous Eisenhower Grade. The 5.0 Coyote V8 truck will just maintain the speed limit up the grade revving uncomfortably high (for me). The 3.5 EcoBoost pulled 9000 pounds with ease with no drama. At one point the driver notes he could tow up the grade at 90mph with the EcoBoost but that would exceed the speed limit.

In the case of the Expedition we don't get an engine choice like they do with the pickup. And you need a 2018+ Expedition to get the 10 speed transmission though, not a 2017 like the F150.

The 2017 5.0 is a bit behind the new one as it does not have the 10 speed or direct injection like the 2018 5.0. It was a year behind the 3.5 as far as that stuff goes. They also should have tested it with 3.73s being naturally aspirated. The EcoBoost is king at high altitudes being turbocharged as it does not lose power with air density. Turbos are kind of awesome for that. Worth noting the 5.0 is more efficient and consumed less fuel.

The 5.0 is a revver, most who have owned both say the 5.4L Triton tows “better” because it has torque available lower in the rev range. That’s undersquare vs oversquare engine 101.

15-17 has slightly hogher tow rating due to lower engine weight. 15-17 also has five star crash test results, the 14 and older did not. These are big reasons we bought our 15 navigator. For max tow weight get a 15-17 expedition with 2WD.

We have the '16 Expy and I pulled my parents very heavy and big boat without issue. Much better than my parents Suburban. The Expy surprised my dad. He had to look under the hood to make sure it was a six cylinder! [emoji1787]

Sadly, that era Expeditions have a lot of issues with paint peeling on the rear hatch and sometime on the hood.

2016MY and 2017MY are covered under warranty (page 11)

If aluminum body panels have corrosion or rust damage, and the damage is not the result of abnormal usage, vehicle accident, customer actions and/or extreme environmental conditions, the corrosion or rust damage repairs are covered for 5 years, unlimited miles.

Typo, reading the specs without wearing my readers and thought it was an 8 not a 2. Sucks getting old... :emotions133::cheers:

You ain’t getting old till you hit about 63.....it’s just a number my friend. I have the Expy Ecoboost with 3.73 gears and 10 speed. Don’t tow anything near 9000 lbs but I wouldn’t hesitate to do that with the Ecoboost. I watched tons of YouTube vids and talked to actual owners before pulling the trigger. I agree with an earlier post that recommends to buy as new as you can with available funds and I would purchase an extended warranty before the Ford warranty expires. Gotta protect those horses at all costs and looks as though you are doing your diligent best to make a good and right choice before making a purchase. Good luck in your endeavors!!

Basically the turbo system doubles the capacity. You are essentially driving up to a 7.0L motor when you get into the turbos.

Well I put the 5 star safety rating on my 2007’ to the test last night against a Ram 2500. Truck saved my life, safety systems worked flawlessly. Impact was at about 35 miles per hour and I walked away, doesn’t get better than that.

I realize now I jinxed myself with these posts yesterday.
Was thinking the same! Plus all the rear end collision posts lately. Odd coincidence. Hope they find the guy that stopped short in front of you and glad you are ok.

They found him, police said he answered the door stone drunk. They cannot charge him with DUI but gave him tickets. I didn’t get any tickets thankfully.

They weren’t very happy with him for fleeing the scene.
