Can I take off the oil pan while the front cover is off? I feel like it would cause an issue with the RTV sealant and oil pan gaskets since there's the junction of the block, front cover and oil pan plus when torquing the bolts (for whichever you put back on first) the gasket will get pressed into a sharp edge. I guess that could be mitigated by putting them back on simultaneously but then I'll be against the clock to get it all in place before the RTV starts drying up and I don't get an A1 seal from it. I fear I'd screw something up in my haste if that's even at all possible/advisable.
The reason I'm asking is because I just removed the oil pump (didn't drop the pick up tube bolts which is pretty cool) and I feel like putting the pick up tube bolts back in will suck way more than taking them out. I was planning on pulling the oil pan anyway after the whole job is done so it would be no skin off my back to save myself the few minutes of that PIAT if this is an advisable procedure.
Or, my other thought is to just continue the job as usual and just forget the pick up tube bolts. once the RTV on the front cover has cured, go back and pull the oil pan for the clean up I was going to do anyway and hit the pick up tube bolts at that time. Then, after all that is done and the RTV on the oil pan has cured, I can finally do the oil pump priming and start it up.
*Update* - question still sort of stands...
I had some downtime since I'm getting cooked in the garage by the Phoenix heat (I was a silly little goober and expected July to not rear its head in October with temps of 110 this weekend) and started reading through my Haynes manual. It says for Oil pump - removal and installation: Unbolt and lower the pan, it's not necessary to completely remove the oil pan, remove pickup tube bolts. Then remove the front cover and yada yada to remove the oil pump mounting bolts. replace the pump, inspect o-ring, put in mounting bolts. Then, "The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal procedure"
So, it sounds like the gaskets and RTV will be fine? they made no mention of how ass you drag while doing it and they are pretty good about pointing out side details lalong those lines.
