I was strolling through YouTube and started watching some fordtech videos and he had some very good information regarding ecoboost common problems and how to alleviate some. In our heated discussion in the triton vs ecoboost thread some people spoke of concerns of carbon build up in the 3.5 engine. These videos address this common issue and gives recommendations to alleviate it and mentions other important info such as when to have cleaning services done. Just thought it's good info to put out to this community as there are a lot of these engines out there. He harps on the importance of installing a catch can on direct injection higher compression engines such as the EcoBoost. The one vid is LOOOOOONNNNNGGGG.

Oh, the problem is fixable.....just not outside a dealer service department.

Kaching $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

"You can't put a catch can on so that way you have to come to u$ and pay u$, oops I meant "us" to fix it later."

"And don't forget, it'll void your warranty to prevent it"

we were running catch cans back on the 7.3 and 6.0's
great little things, no oil should be dripped on the ground, so a catch can works perfect. surprised ford or the others haven't gone down that road
by 8.3 cummins has one built into the valve cover appendage that separates the oil mist from the air and it drains back while the air goes on its way

I put well over 100k miles on my 2002 7.3. Zero issues in 10 years and never added a catch can.

yep, me too, with a catch can and much higher ecm programing, it just kept the oil mist out of the intercooler.
made everything cleaner.

I'm not sure about the catch can
I previously had a direct injected(which are subject to carbon build up) 3.6 gm motor
Had plenty of people with 150k miles and no issues and no catch can

Would be interested to see a catch can vs non catch can carbon build up in similar mileage motors

I wonder if there is a difference in **** buildup rates between regular and synthetic oils.

They say that full synthetic is better because it is rated for higher temperatures so when the crankcase ventilation flows through the intake it doesn't burn as readily as Dino oil. First oil change at 1000 miles I switched to full synthetic from semi synthetic. I'll see if it helps.

I'll just keep the oil clean every 3-4K with Motorcraft Semi Synth and Shell premium fuel and hope for the best.

That is about the cheapest check valve one can buy but it does handle high temps & oil....same that I used on my oil return line on my 650turbo bike.

To de-mist, my SLK uses a oil separator (looks like a snail shell) but I still get oil in my intercooler.

Sizing them is very difficult. You'd really want an adjustable sized intercooler because if it's too large, which is is when the engine is cool, gases and liquids will condense and pool....and if it's too small, it's doesn't cool the incoming charge enough to increase it's density....

Tough act to pull off....but Ford seems to have gotten a pretty good result from their design. I can't take any of the videos into account since there are way too many variables that are unknown. For instance, if the driver goes 7 miles each way to work....ANY engine is going to pay dearly...so we just don't know.
I drive 46 miles each way to work....I doubt that I have anything like that in my trucks engine<LOL>!

My commute is 2.5 miles one way. Barely enough time to make warm air in the winter. I'll be expecting some issues, although to do any shopping or eat out its a 30 mile drive.

Short or long rides, yard, construction equipment and boats....I always warm up the engines to operating temperatures. On the '16 Expy I wait until the engine temp indicates "normal" on the display.
