Is all the "fuel saving" tech really worth it in the long run?

I don't really like the fact that in todays modern world I seem to have to become an expert on ten million different subjects I don't want to become an expert on. I first noticed that when the Deepwater Horizon rig blew in the Gulf. All of a sudden I'm seeing it on the news every day for months and trying to understand it. In recent days I'm asked to understand Turkey's internal conflicts / Syria / the Kurds / Russians / etc. I want to Golf Fish F*ck Drink Mow my lawn etc and expect my government to handle this stuff for me. Geez, whats the BEST interest rate and why and what is a fair tax schedule? Life is getting too complicated, especially with all the Conspiracy Theories floating around.

I miss the days when you rolled up the car window by turning a handle!!!!

This is what the founding fathers are expecting of you and of every patriotic citizen: to hold your elected officials' feet to the fire, so they don't screw you, your children and future generations out of what's rightfully and historically yours.

There are some countries where this is no longer possible, because complacent and clueless citizens have allowed the insane to take over the asylum, under the banner of "democracy".

Do not forget one thing: fear is a great motivator, has been for millennia. So, whenever someone tells you that "you should pay us X amount or you'll die in 12 years!!!", it should raise some very big red flags in your mind... these red flags are better known today as "conspiracy theories", because talking about them is "verboten" by the Church of Climate.

The choice is yours...

fear like immigrants are rapists? Or fear like some politicians want the US to look like Venezuela? Or fear like the Clintons kill their ‘enemies’ Or fear like we need to ‘lock up’ our politics opponents? Or fear like windmills cause cancer? Or fear like black helicopters are coming for all of your guns?

Maybe we should get back to original topic?

Nah.

Some people just like drinking clean water and breathing fresh air...even Some conspiratorial anti science snowflakes that block opposing opinions like it.
But most of us always had clean water and clean air to breathe and did not have problems like California during the 70s. They had an issue, they worked to fix it, and they improve their situation. That's what the rest of the country should have done when and if they had the problem. But that's not how it worked.
You'll get nothing but dislike for me toward the entire State of California. It might be a logical, ill-tempered, misplaced, and even slightly inaccurate considering it's a very large state.... but I blame CA for many unnecessary (at least for the time and location) regulations and changes.
Maybe I'm just not a proactive person.

Just had to bite on this one. MrToby … I thought Ohio was the Genesis of the Environmental movement in the 70's after the Cuyahoga River caught fire 13 times? Ohio formed the Ohio EPA. Its a lot better now! Remember that Indian crying? Can I say Indian? Native American. I guess you should hate Ohio?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuyahoga_River

and the algae blooms in Lake Erie are kind of bad
https://greatlakes.org/campaigns/lake-erie-algae-blooms/

They've done a lot to improve Grand Lake, more remains to get it healthy again
that's in Ohio btw

I love they try to save fuel, but put on auto start. The vehicle now can sit there and idle, with no one in it. I think the dash screens are distracting. The push button start is stupid. 10 airbags are nice, but a bit of over kill. They still make cheap models, with no frills like Kia, Honda and Jeep Wrangler. Most people prefer the better equipped models.

I dunno … I think you (not you personally) can work that kind of logic too far. Car makers want to add features that will sell cars, they're not designed by the government (some think they are). These vehicles will also go 110 mph which burns a lot of extra fuel. You don't want a limit on top end do you?

The 10 airbags thing. If you've ever been in an accident and one of those airbags saved you, you wouldn't think its overkill would you? Saved my Mom!

One thing to consider. they put in 10 airbags, because the car is unsafe.

I read the first page and skipped to the last page, so I hope somebody brought up my point prior to now.

With all of the posts on the first page, not one person brought up climate change. Even with all of the divisiveness in our country today, climate change is by far the most important issue facing us right now.

We were headed in the right direction when we started implementing higher mpg standards, but now that policy is trying to be ended. We need to squeeze every mpg out of our vehicles we can before IC engines are obsolete.

Please think of our kids and grandkids and this planet. And, yes, fuel savings are "worth it".

Most of the active posters on this Forum do not buy into Climate Change / Global Warming. They either think its a scam or (like Mick Mulvaney) they say" get over it". They are more concerned about AOC & the Green New Deal than they are about Climate Change. Besides all these pollution controls and gas mileage engineering tricks cost money. Money that they could better use in other ways. I suspect a lot of them figure they wont be around by the time (IF) it turns out to be real and a real problem - so it wont impact them. There are a LOT of people who firmly believe that the Earth is huge and no way could humans have any impact on it's climate. Many think there is no such thing as air or water pollution either. They look out their front door on a nice sunny day and think "its nice out there, whats the issue?".
just sayin

I thought this latest outrage over burning the Amazon rainforest was interesting. Me? I wonder WHY all these people think people in developed countries (USA Europe etc) think they can dictate to Brazil what they can do with their country? Its their country, shouldn't they be able to do what they want? I mean we did that here in the USA. If all these people think the Amazon Rainforest is so important then get the wallet out and start buying it and then when you own it you can do whatever you want with it. Until then ..

It was already been brought up by the anti science conspiracy theorists.

They don’t even think clean water and air are important so, youve got a tough row to hoe here.

I’ll bite. I’m relatively right wing/conservative. I still believe in climate change and believe it needs to be treated as a problem but anything human/ consumer driven is bad for the environment. Consumerism is the problem, buying a new truck every two years is the problem, buying new phones and tablets every year is the problem. Automotives and transport make up about 14% of emissions in the U.S. Industry/agriculture alone make up about 1/2 of emissions in comparison. I’m sick of reading articles by left wingers that ignore the statistics. You have less of a carbon footprint if you drive an old big block 454 Chevy than if you trade in and buy a new vehicle every two years. You are allowing the planets resources to be depleted and pollution to be expelled to manufacture a new product constantly. So no, you aren’t green if you buy a Tesla unless you keep it forever. You are only spot treating and we are doing it wrong. Then we can go on, you can’t control what other nations do, we are a fraction of the worlds emissions.

There is a slippery slope. We need a good and healthy environment (and improve upon it), but industry needs to survive at the same time. You cannot be like CA and choke off business to do so. It’s give and take for everything. Improvement comes with time and effort with better engineering and principles. This is something the government CANNOT artificially force by putting some pixie fart law on the books which is what cafe is. They aren’t in the business of making automobiles and the government cannot overcome physics. It is not attainable (currently) without huge sacrifices and major price increases that hurt the consumers and market. I’m all for improving the environment where I can. I never litter, I keep my vehicles running healthy, I recycle wherever possible.
