Keep it or scrap it?

I purchased a 2006 Eddie Bauer edition from someone I thought was trustworthy found out they weren't engineering needs $2500 worth of repair or more trying to figure out whether it's worth keeping since I've already paid the seller $2500 for the vehicle before Finding all the engine problems.

It all depends on the condition of everything else. Mileage? Rust? Interior?

Body great shape/minimum rust.
Interior great with minor rip and repaired drivers seat. Tranny good.
Mileage 200,000 plus
No leaks
Everything works.

I sort of ran into the same situation a few years ago with a purchase on a 2004 Expy. I had to replace the transmission and some other repairs; however, after that it ran like a beast. I bought a 2010 Limited last year that was in excellent condition to replace it rather than get some body work done to the 2004. My neighbor needed a dependable commuter vehicle, so I sold it to him. With 270K on it, he could not be happier. It still runs awesome and the recent snow storm we had in Prince William County didn't bother him at all. If you have the funds to make the repairs, you'll still get plenty of use from it.

All in all 5.5k for an 06 w the current market so long as everything else is great that isn't terrible. Not a good deal by any means but not the worst thing in the world. Consider what other options are around you could buy after selling at a loss. I am slapping new Michelins on my 240k 2003 today and expect to wear them out so mileage wouldn't concern me if the rest is up to it.

Welcome to site. What are the engine problems, is it just misfire codes? These trucks are not really tough to troubleshoot, did you have a shop give you the 2,500 price?

Cam phasers and broken timing chain guide.
Yes..local shop gave price.

If they do the work make sure they install a high volume oil pump, steel ratcheting tensioners, and pull the oil pan to clean all the old guide pieces out of the oil tube intake screen.

All expeditions in the 2004-2013 ish age range will need the repair your car is facing. For some expos that repair happens at 100k, yours came at 200K Not bad. With repairs in place, you can reasonably expect 300-400k from that engine. It’s a 200,000 mile car so expect other small issues to pop up from time to time.

What more input are you looking for?? Folks have chimed in and basically said that it’s worth it in todays car market to have it repaired, provided the rest of the car is sound. I responded and said that the the repairs your car requires are normal for that generation expedition and it’s mileage. Not sure of repair cost because I do all my own work. If looking for parts list, I used new genuine Ford cam phasers, a Cloyes timing chain and guide kit, genuine Ford cast iron ratcheting tensioners and a Melling M360 high volume oil pump. If I were to do it again, I would replace the roller followers also for piece of mind. Purrs like a kitten.

He did ! I missed it. Sorry. Were it me I'd figure this scarce used car deal and inflated price's won't last all that long. He's at the point where he imo is about to throw good money after bad. If it is a 4x4, he should be able to recoup most of his money parting it out or selling it to somebody with the ability to perform the needed repairs.
