I hope one of you Expedition guys can help me.
I recently purchased a 98 Expedition 4.6 that had the motor dismantled by the previous owner for a leaking head gasket so I never heard it run or driven it. I was told that the transmission was recently replace with a salvage unit that had 57K on it. The markings on the trans support that. Instead of rebuilding the 4.6 from the boxes of parts I had I looked for a used engine. I found a guy parting a 99 F150 that had "burnt valve" on a 90K engine or so I was told. After I spent a few hours pulling it out of his truck I got it home to find a thrown rod. Glad I only paid $125 for it. Good news was I took everthing that was attached to the engine. ( lots of spare parts ) After that mess I found a slightly banged up 99 P71 Crown Vic that had a new engine that turned out to be a NPI just like my Expedition and ran beautifully. Now I thought I was in bussiness. I changed the timing cover and oil pan. The inside of the engine looked new and has all the indicatons of a reman.
Here is what I'm struggling with...
I painfully installed the 4.6 back in the Expedition using all the original Expedition parts and sensors paying close attention to doing it correctly. After completion and a short prayer I started it up. Ran rough at first soon smoothed out. The problem is it has a knock coming from the bell housing that sounds like a rod. I had the notorious cracked flexplate issue before on my Explorer so I assumed I didn't inspect that close enough before I installed it. I just pulled the flexplate back out only to find it appears to be in good shape. The Flexplate bolts and TC nuts were tight and I dont see any indication of rubbing on any of the components.
1. Would it have mattered if I didn't line up the pink dot that was on the flex plate and TC?
2. Could the TC have made such a noise? ( I'm not a transmission guy)
I don't want to guess and buy a new TC and put it back together.
HELP.............
