I might be crazy but i have just come over from 15 years of diesels and i noticed something when i looked under the hood today. The intake manifold looks to be 4.5" or more where the air intake through the fender is around 3" In the diesel world that starves the engine for air!! Wouldn't it help fuel economy AND performance to have the intake snorkel the same size as the intake manifold???

That's what a Cold air intake is for :)
I think diesels need more air than gas engines do. Not sure.

My parents have a 01 Powerstroke. Fun to drive :)

That is a silencer to keep it from making noise at WOT. A good cold air intake for the 3V motor adds some power. I haven't looked at the newer trucks heavily, but the older ones would allow you to remove this piece. You could use a hacksaw and replace the restrictive section with some tubing of you choice up to the factory airbox. Just make sure it still sucks air from the fender otherwise the hot air will kill performance.
