Hello again. 2007 Lincoln Navigator 160k. Noticed small spots of gas on the ground and of course the smell. Found out it is a leaking sending unit from the gas tank. The only problem I have is it does sometimes have hard starting. Like it takes more then a few seconds to start her up. My question is should I replace the whole sending unit or just the seal itself. Not sure if the hard starting is caused by air leaking in or the fuel pump Itself going bad. Also my other question is I do like to stay with oem parts but I'm only keeping this vehicle for 2 more years. What's the best aftermarket pump to go with? Thanks in advance

160k. Once in a while it will take a little over 2 seconds to start

1st I would check the fuel pressure
When was the fuel filter last replaced?

If you are intending to drop the tank to fix the leak I would then replace the complete fuel pump/sending unit assembly

The tank is already dropped. That's how I know it's the seal around the sending unit that's leaking. It won't let me upload any photos. That's what I was thinking. Just wanted to get a 2nd opinion for a new sending unit. I saw the spectra ones on amazon for under 200 bucks. Pretty good reviews. I normally buy oem but I'm not keeping this thing for more then 2 years. Oh and the fuel filter is definitely due for a change. Replaced it about 45k miles ago. Unless it's the fuel filter that's clogged causing the fuel starvation when starting.

I don't think if air was leaking in that it would cause hard starting as the pump is submerged in the fuel or at least should be

Replace the complete unit with a filter. The spectra one are ok. Sometimes the sender for the gauge is off with the spectra . Oem is the best. The fuel pressure bleeds off because the check valve in the pump is starting to fail. I have a spectra in my windstar and it's fine. My brother has a spectra in his f150 and the fuel gauge is off. That's my experience so far.
