Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice before buying a 2017 Ford Expedition EL Limited with 155k miles, sold by a car dealer in Texas.

The price is very attractive, and I’ve already done a test drive — everything felt good: no warning lights, smooth shifting, good power, no strange noises.

According to the records, the vehicle has two previous owners, and no car accidents are reported on the Carfax.

The water pump was replaced in 2021, which I know is an important item on the 3.5L EcoBoost.

Before moving forward, I’d really appreciate your advice on:

  • What I should pay close attention to during another test drive
  • What visual inspections I can do myself (engine bay, under the vehicle, interior, etc.)
  • Common red flags at this mileage that might indicate hidden problems or something that’s “too good to be true”

I’m trying to avoid any surprises and make an informed decision.

Thanks in advance for your experience and tips — it’s much appreciated!

I bought mine three years ago from Carmax (former rental). It had 82,000 then, 155,000 today. I''ve replaced the water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, transmission fluid change and belts. I also installed a catch can on the PVC side to help reduce the carbon built up in cylinders witch is a known problem with the 3.5 Ecoboost. If you stay on top of all the maintenace you should get 250,000 out of your 2017.

I have a 2017 I bought used at about 30K miles...now at 90+ My issues have mostly involved the recalls. Brakes went out due to master Leak, blower motor, rearview camera. Make sure these recalls have been addressed. Also replaced a traffic awareness sensor, and currently the seat heater/AC doesn't work.

I would try to look at the maintenance records to see if all recommended maintenance has been performed, oil changes, filters, transfer case, transmission, transaxle, brake fluid flushes, etc. also with those miles plugs would have required replacement.

I bought my 2017 new, and it has been a pure joy from day one.
But day two has now brought on a hopeless situation - my Body Control Module [ BCM ] has failed and it cannot be repaired, nor is it available from anyone anywhere, including Ford. It is simply not made anymore, which is astonishing and agonizing to me. Luckily I have a friend who is an electronics genius and he did some fantastic workarounds that has me still on the road.
But be forewarned - there is NO replacement for the 2017 BCM, so at least one of the parts on your possible purchase is in jeopardy, and I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
Good luck!

Ive had mine since new. Transmission went at 120,000 miles but I drive hard. On my second water pump. I have a small antifreeze leak that comes and goes by the driver side turbo. I’ve also had a few electrical issues due to the wiring harness in the drivers side door. Some of the wires in the loom from the body to the door have broken requiring splices. I do love driving the truck though
