New member and I've had my 2004 XLT since new. I don't drive her often as I have a company car. But I have been driving her on long trips lately and I'm looking to do some mods to increase HP, Fuel Effeciency and appearance. What are some good mods and products to start with first. Is a chip an option? After market exhaust?? Cold air/filter mod??? Are these effective mods to begin with? I am also looking to upgrade the head lights, can you steer me to some good options for this please. Thanks.

welcome to the site...post pics of the ride!!!

you've listed what everyone pretty much starts with...as far as programming...i have superchips vortex 1950...i like it...but many are suggesting that if you spend that amount of money to go ahead and get a custom tune instead of a programmer and they'll give you everything youre asking for...for the intake...if youre handy...search forum for "Gotts Mod"...a lot of ppl do that instead of buying intake...

The Gotts Mod looks easy enough. Is there any benefit to putting a high flow filter in place of the stock one and removing the enclosure. In other words just leaving it open and exposed in the engine compartment. This is how many of us run the K&N's on the turbo charged Grand Nationals, although some route CAI tubing out of the engine bay. As far as the Super Chips Vortex, is that a simple chip change out, or is there actual programming involved. And how much is it. All of my car modification experience is with a 1987 Buick Grand National so forgive my ineptness on our Ford trucks. Also, what about exhaust mods, are there after market kits available that offer decent improvements, or am I better off going to an exhaust shop to have one done?

Welcome to the group...my 2cents as what I have done with mine...I have done the Gotts mod and to it a few steps further..pictures in my album or PM me and I will explain...I have an Edge CS programmer that plugs into you computer port (ODBll) and it allows you 3 different programs as well as customizing your own...also you can monitor up 8 displays at one one time...like trans temp, engine temp, mass air flow, timing,etc...if you google "Edge CS programmer" you will find it...about 350 to 425 depending on where you buy...this brought my 5.4 to life and really jump my MPG...

BakerEdition, by adding the programmer how much did it increase your MPG? We just took a 1700 mile trip to Colorado and SantaFe and averaged 16.4mpg. Since we go to colorado several times a year increased mileage would be great.

I went from 9 mpg city and watching the gauge move...to 15 mpg...I was getting 15 mpg on the highway and now 20-21 mpg...now I also have to use 93-94 octane but the price diiference pays for itself...so if it cost me an extra $9.00 to fill with premium and get and 55 to 65 miles per tank the math works out....the programmer has already paid for itself...I drove from Michigan to Tennessee on a tank and 1/2 running 70 to 75mph...and im running level 3 performance....you can call Brian at Edge Products and they will answer all your questions...make sure you tell him I sent you...But The product works...like I said I wanted it for MPG's and got MPG's and Performance...best of both worlds...I was using Shell V-power 93 for about 2 months, pure gas meaning no ethanol...then for a test i filled up with Sunoco 94 octane and what a difference....better throttle response, pick up and MPG's...let me know if you need more info....

I'm not seeing the Edge CS model for my year Expedition (2004). But I did find the "Super Chips" tuner for $300 and change. Is the Super Chips Cortex 1950 the only option for me? Also, what vendors are you guys getting your stuff from??

I'd like to start off with a ECM programmer of some sort and an improved intake first. Then perhaps an exhaust improvment down the road.

Sounds like you already have a plan in place. All good things in my opinion and worthy of the cash. My sequence was exhaust(FlowMaster), exhaust again(MagnaFlow, drone too bad with Flow), K&N CAI, finished it off with HyperTech. Mileage returns on our long runs get to 18-19 mpg running 70-72 mph.

I did the Gott's mod and used a Spectre air filter. Throttle response seems a little better. I'm looking to do the exhaust next. Might go to a couple of shops and see what they can do for me and how much it will cost. Is one system better over the other? for example, Magna Flow over Flow Master. I read the previous post and he prefers the Magana Flow as it is more quiet. I realize that only so much can be improved upon with an exhaust system. Also, I don't want it really loud or with a loud drone or the wife won't want to drive it. I looked underneath to see how hard it would be to knock out the catalytic converters, but it looks like there are two.

Also, as far as head lights, what are some good replacements for a brighter affect? Also, part numbers please. It is a 2004 model and we're thinking of getting a new one some time next year. Obviously if we decide to do this, I won't be going nuts with this one.

FlowMaster super 40 replaced at the wife's request. The drone at 70 mph was pretty brutal. MagnaFlow gives a mellow tone at idle, decent sound rolling into the throttle, great sound at WOT and best of all, a bareable drone at the sweet spot of 70-75. You still know its under there.

if you do the exhaust do a catback system. since yours is a 2nd gen you cant really do a true dual system. but you can do a DI/SO muffler. As far as the muffler goes its all a matter of what you want. Some want loud others want performance with little additional noise.

here are a few examples

Bandit, if you are looking to get the most mileage out of your truck, then here is a list of stuff that you will want to consider. If it says anything, I am still pulling 13 MPG running 37" mud tires with 4.56 gears.

The big one is the Gotts mod using a cotton gauze K&N filter. Lets the engine breathe better and also nets you 1 hp and 10 ft-lbs of torque (dyno numbers, ran on my truck). Next would be the e-fans. While this seems obscure, you are looking at gaining roughly 6 hp and 8 ft-lbs of torque. The beauty of the e-fans is that you gain that at both 500 RPM and 5,000 RPM. Not many mods give you gains at both ends of the spectrum.

The other mod that I would tell you to look into is porting out the 90 degree elbow just downstream of the throttlebody. Not that difficult to modify and clean up, but you can gain a little bit more there.

As for the exhaust, this is a slippery slope. For mileage, in short, the more restrictive the exhaust, the better the mileage. But at the same time, opening up the exhaust can get you more power at higher RPMs. From my playing and talking with others that have modified their exhausts, the breakover point seems to be something right around a true dual 2.5" exhaust setup or a single 3" setup, both running something along the lines of a Flowmaster 70 series muffler (fairly restrictive, yet flows better than the factory muffler).

Another thing to maximize mileage is to toss all the body bolt ons. Things like a brush guard, visor, window vents, etc add more drag to the truck, making it harder to push through the air. About the only bolt on that even remotely improves anything is the wing on the back of the truck that helps to direct the wind down over the tailgate. But, now you are looking at something that is taking the weight off of the rear tires and can make the back end of the truck hydroplane easier when at speed.

Another biggie is keeping the engine RPMs between 1800 and 2200 RPM. Getting below 1800 RPM and the engine drops out of its power band and the valve timing isn't quite up to *****. Getting above 2200 RPM and now you are getting into the major power producing range of the motor and when you make power, you are also using more gas.

Hopefully this gives you something to start with. I went one step further with my truck and ported/polished the whole intake system to allow the air to move easier. But, this was due to my background in fluid dynamics and me trying to see just how much of a difference it made. Don't pull the motor apart just to do this. But, if you have the motor apart for something else, by all means as it only takes a few hours to do and you do see a little bit of a gain. I had my truck torn apart to Timesert all 8 spark plug holes.
