Ok Iv got a 00 EB 5.4 178k, Iv has it for about 6 Months and I cannot figure out this noise for the life of me. Iv inspected underneath and found a rear passenger lower shock mount bolt was loose so tightened that up and that didn’t fix it, today I replace the front half shaft passenger side knowing it had a messed up boot so thought that could be it and of course it isn’t lol. I’m at a lost as to what this noise could be, it is random and sounds like a metal zip tie around a drive shaft almost, imagine going through a drive thru, that’s about the speed that it does it at. it’s decently loud but I can’t isolate where it’s coming from. Any ideas?

Took it to a Jbc tire real close to my house and they said it sounds likes it’s in the transfer case or rear end. Engaging 4wd doesn’t make the noise go away but didn’t try 4lo

Anybody that can't tell front diff from rear diff, needs to get another job! He'd be perfect for a government job, the White House 1600 Pennsylvania ave is where his mail should go. Wow! Front end rear end, bring the Suv to a real shop, not a rubber swapper! Try again and report back.

Check the center caps for stones or if they are loose. The springs/clips get old and lets them click. Or if you want to really annoy someone, you pop them off and put a small rock in them. When at driving speeds, centrifugal force holds the rock to the side but at low speeds the rock just bounces around. When we drove the crown vics, we would put rocks in the center caps.

I’ve checked my center caps. I plan on taking it to a drivetrain soecialized shop soon to get a more solid opinion. They did lift it off the ground and the noise would not occur. Does the A4WD activate at super low speeds and then disengages when you hit a certain MPH?

If the noise didn’t occur in the air it’s possible that was due to the fact there was no load on the wheels. Have the new shop check the wheel bearings

Wouldn’t bearings make more of a grinding noise and possibly get louder with speed? It also stops making the noise about 12mph

Not really. Wheels off the ground equals a load of probably 60lbs. Wheels on the ground the load is probably around 2k lbs If the bearing is just starting to go bad that would be the difference

Can you isolate if it is coming from the front or rear, left or right? Have someone stand outside the vehicle and drive past a couple of time with each side facing them. See if they can give you a better opinion on where, front/back/left/right, the noise is coming from.

Noises like this drive me crazy. They are hard to narrow down.

Ya Iv done that before and it’s loud and echos and very hard to tell where exactly it’s coming from. I’m at a lost till I can take it to a better shop to diagnose it. Could I unplug the sensor or actuator on the transfer case to prevent it from working and see if the noise goes away ?

Rocks in the hubcaps! Copper, did you used to burn ants with a magnifying glass! If your shop can't figure it out, seek out a shop that has a Snap on noise machine, that has the placeable noise ears. They can be mounted around different areas underneath, then vehicle driven. That way they can pinpoint the area, cuts down on guessing, and replacement of unnecessary parts.
