Hey y'all I have a 2002 expedition E.B. that runs great but it does seem to have low power, I have driven my brothers 01' EB and my sisters 02' XLT and they both have much better throttle response and power than mine does. I have already replaced the basics I.E. air filter, fuel filter and I checked the number #1 ( or #5 ) spark plug to see what condition they where in and they look pretty much brand new. The only other thing I can think of is that something is putting a constant load on the truck. 4wd system seems to engage and disengage just fine, any other Ideas of what to check? I am getting about 11.4mpg in town and from what I hear that's close to average.

What kind of gears do you have? Look on the drivers door placard for an axle code. Lower gears means slower acceleration.

You can pull fuse 104 under the hood to turn off the A4WD completely and see if that is an issue.

Any check engine light codes? Does the motor idle rough or shake under hard acceleration?

Are you getting any check engine lights?
Might have an EGR issue. If the EGR is stuck open or is just fried, that would drastically affect power and acceleration.
Changed the EGR in mine and it became a new aminal.

Rear gears are 3.55, im not sure what the standard gears are but they seem about average, I have pulled 104 before but in all honesty it was just so I could spin the tires on gravel so I may have to do that again to see if it makes a difference. No CEL or anything and the engine runs smooth, there is a slight hesitation on acceleration though, at half throttle or less at about 1500 RPM the truck kinda bogs down and doesnt like to pull through the band but over half throttle its fine. Not sure about EGR, like I said no codes on the ECM but can the EGR fail without coding? How would I check that?

Flat mid range sounds like EGR. I would swap it. After all, the one in there is probably factory.

I don't think there is a such thing as a "performance" EGR.
EGR valves do not last forever. After time exhaust gasses tend to burn them up on the inside, or just cake the seat with carbon. i think I paid ~$70 for a new one at NAPA. There have also been posts on how to check your DPFE to make sure it is working properly to control the EGR. A new DPFE is roughly $100.
If the EGR is stuck open, it is letting too much exhaust gas into the engine, therefore gives you less power.

yes, low power through mid range is exactly what my symptom is, so can an EGR go bad without throwing codes? either way I cant fix this until I fix the MASSIVE fuel leak that just started on my way home today.... at least she got me home...

okay so before I spend the money and replace the EGR valve I have a question. will the fact that my 5.4 has the standard yet horrible R side exh. manifold leak effect the egr system at all?

Are you still having the low power problem since you repaired the fuel leak?

Where on the exhaust manifold is it leaking. I just replaced my RH exhaust manifold on my 01 and the only difference I notice is its much quieter now

yes the fuel leak is fixed and im still getting low power, I have seen that video before, my problem is 2 or three of the studs are already broken inside the manifold. I am not confident enough in my welding / drilling skills to fix it myself without destroying the heads. the muffler shop down the road said they would be able to fix it for $300-400 so that's my plan whenever I save up enough. Im just wondering if that could effect the EGR as far as the power goes.
