I know through searches that this topic has been beat about thoroughly, and it sounds as if 5W30 will help with engine longevity at best, or at least not hurt anything at worst.

My specific question is: I have a factory reman engine that now has 30K miles on it. Is it too low miles to make the switch to 5W30, or does that not have anything to do with it?

I have a fresh 5.4 3v that a reputable local engine shop rebuilt. For their break-in they specified 15-40 Rotella. They also want no synthetic oil until 10k miles.
If your concern is that going from 5-20 to 5-30 on a fresh motor will harm anything, it won't. It will likely help. Just use good quality oil and filter.

When my expedition was new I switched to 5w30 once the run in was completed and have never looked back, my engine has 220,000+ miles and doesn’t use a drop of oil between changes, I have only used Mobil 1 synthetic and at 120,000 I switched to the Mobil 1 high mileage.. have been very happy with the 5w30 oil.. I would switch straight away and not worry about it.

My oil cap says 5w30 right on it; do some expeditions call for a different weight?

I've been happy with 5w30 through my first 75,000kms and have always changed the oil myself with 5w30 starting with the first oil change around 3,000 kms.

I have 300,000 on my 2008 5.4 untouched. It's run 5w20 Mobil 1 forever, but I've also wondered about changing to 5w30, too. Likely really doesn't matter for me now anyway....

I'm currently running 5w-40 euro spec oil in my fleet of a 6.8 v10, 4.6 3v, and 3.5 Ecoboost. I change them all at 5,000 miles. I like running the thicker oils because it helps with ring seal.
