Misfire in the 5.4L engine

I am getting the P0308 code on my 5.4L 2010 Expedition. Ton of people get this code but here are the symptoms specific to me.
  • No issues starting up and idling when cold
  • No miss under light throttle, cruising
  • Starts missing under hard acceleration. CEL starts flashing then stays steady
  • The miss returns randomly when coming to a stop and idling after some driving
  • Miss at idle is accompanied by ticking/tapping sound from top of the engine that goes away by revving the engine
My local mechanic claimed he swapped the coil packs and the problem remained. He wanted to try everything and charge me every step of the way. He also said if he pulled the plug there is a chance they might break. No guarantees it'll get fixed either so I said no. At this point I want to take it to the dealer as I hope they have, or should have, more experience with issues like this. Any pointers?

You don't say what the mileage is or when the plugs were last changed.

It sounds like a misfire. I can tell you from my experience with my 01, 4.6 L 2V , that the Ford claim of 100K plug life is a myth. Mine were changed at 45K and were found with gaps large enough to pass a nickle. That is over .80 gap.

Worn plugs result in higher firing voltages and higher firing voltages result in the rubber boot arcing through. Then you will have a misfire, and usually the COP is blamed. But it is the plug and the boot.

There may be some diagnostic scope that will monitor the primary coil and give some indication of the firing voltage of each plug. Or you could just change all the boots and the one suspect plug and see what results. Chances are some other plugs are failing as well.

Truck just turned 100,000 miles and I have no idea if plugs have been changed. There re a myriad of causes people mention. I would like to see if you can KNOW for sure before start swapping parts.

The 2010 has no problems with breaking plugs. That problem was fixed in the middle of the 2008 model year.

You need to check your plugs. Basics first. Anyone diagnosing a miss would do this. Pull one and look at it.

And you need a new mechanic who knows this.

Check the wire harness for cylinder 8 by starting the engine and move around the coil pack wire harness. If it makes the engine sputter then all you have to do is get another wire harness for that coil.

Truck just turned 100,000 miles and I have no idea if plugs have been changed.
That is something that definitely needs to be checked.

Start with plugs and coils. Move the plug to another cylinder see if it follows. Based on the results do the same with the coil. Like Trainmaster mentioned “basics first”

Plugs with worn gaps won't fire reliably under hard acceleration and will foul . Change them...

You need another mechanic. Any mechanic with any experience at all would have changed the plugs along with the coil packs and boots on a 100K mile vehicle with misfire issues, even if they were the plugs known to have breaking issues. Had to have them changed on my 05, and they only broke three plugs. It takes a little time to get them out without breaking all of them and costs more. I had a $600 bill and no coil packs were changed, just the plugs and boots. My mechanic told me those were the most troublesome due to arcing (as noted earlier) and recommended not changing the coils unless needed -- they were easy to get to anyway (compared to plugs), and he wouldn't change the plugs without changing boots. Still have the original coils with no issues at 106K now (only put 3-4K a year on it -- mainly a camper tow vehicle I drive once a month even if not taking camper anywhere).

I'm a reasonably knowledgeable mechanic myself, though mostly for older cars (up to about early 90s), and not that familiar with the 5.4L -- just read enough to know the plugs and boots are a bigger issues, and many coil packs are replaced when the issue was the plugs and boots simply because the plugs are hard to get to and earlier ones prone to breaking. I'd intended to change the plugs, but a good look under the hood revealed that only three were relatively easy to get to, another two without too much difficulty, the other three required moving a lot of electrical components. Closed hood and took it to someone more familiar with them. I could have done it, but it would have been an all day job for me, figuring what to move where as I went. Wasn't worth saving a few hundred knowing what aggravation it would be for a first timer. Let someone who had done a few do it...

With all the advice given, the plugs are a lot cheaper than the coils, any mechanic worth his 10mm socket had ought to know to inspect and measure the plugs first.

I recently put Iridium plugs and all new COPs on my 2010 with the 5.4. I felt a miss prior to changing everything and fuel mileage was crappy. I still have the miss after changing everything. I found out these motors are common to throw cam followers. I'll be pulling valve covers soon to see if that's the issue. Check out FordTechmakuloco on youtube. He has several 5.4L videos
