MPG vs Cruise control report.

Sport mode will put vehicle into 4wd which will burn more fuel.

Do you have any public data or personal experience (data) that 4WD / AWD reduces MPG?

I know a lot of people "just figure that it must" but maybe the impact is minimal? That's my personal experience. Also probably depends on the driving profile, like highway speeds as in the OP example.

The 4wd spins the front differential, so I would sure think takes energy. I can hear mine whine when I put it in 4wd. It silences when put back into 2wd.
I HATE that sport does that 4wd switch every fn time. I just swap back immediately.

You've made my point. Yes, "would think / some energy". But how much? My testing says very little. Just sayin. Anybody has a different experience ... Belly up to the bar.

Dropped my truck off tonight. Suppose to be there “all day” tomorrow for the fixes it needs. Once I get it back in working order I’ll try to do some comparos on drive modes and cruise. Mines a 2wd so eliminates that variable.

I would hazard to guess that its mere existence results in the most lost fuel economy and that whether it is engaged or not is probably less of an impact.

Well ford says it costs 2 mpg so there’s that. Got truck back. Not sure when I can do any testing. Looks like no need to stray far from home for well for a long time.

Is 2 mpg ... having a 2WD vs AWD capable vehicle or putting in AWD vs RWD?

I have experienced a 1 to 3 mpg drop in mpg in 4A. I was wondering why I was loosing so much (after an oil change, adding a pusher bar, raptor skid plate, and roof rack crossbars).

it has been a bit wet and rainy and had it in 4A for a couple of fill-ups. Went back to 2H and economy was back up. I was surprised it made such a difference. Looking at the ‘offroad’ display, it did show it pushing power to all wheels particularly under acceleration.

I just keep the 4A OFF to save the wear and tear..... Fuels an added bonus.

2014EL 5.4 transfer case (AWD capable)

I just drove 2200 miles interstate Wyoming to NY. Tested gas mileage as reported by the vehicle computer running in AWD or 2WD under various conditions, at speed. Sometimes I ran 6 hours or more or less and I switched back and forth from 2WD to AWD about 6 times.
Obviously hills not the same or wind or speed or fuel etc so a little sketchy. At no time did I find a big difference in MPG. I obtained 14.5 to 15.2 MPG depending on the run. It almost seemed like AWD might be giving me better MPG but not much if anything. As I headed east the speed limit goes from 80 to 65. Better MPG at 65.

Those new light truck tires seem to really hit my MPG.
I'll be putting my summer tires back on soon and will see if that gets me back to 17MPG

New tires lower fuel mileage. More tread to flex. Usually see 5% reduction in mpg going from old worn tires to new ones.

Aggressive tires absolutly kill MPG. My buddy put some 8 plys on his 1/2 ton and it cut 3-4 mpg off. Be careful what you put on for tires. Some are crazy heavy and then the wind resistance is also a factor.

Are you saying the older trucks like your 2014 have awd mode? Or are you calling 4A awd? I think it's sad the newer trucks dont have the 4A.

My 2014EL has 2WD 4A 4H 4L settings
My 2003XLT has 2WD A4WD 4H 4L settings

the 4A and the A4WD setting are the same .... and IMHO are AWD
but industry standard definitions are fuzzy on the meaning of 4WD & AWD, I guess maybe
I (luckily) have no idea what newer trucks have
