This 2013 5.4 is our 4th. Its predecessors all averaged around 16 mpg. All driven the same route . This booger gets 13.6! Ideas?

My '11 Limited only got maybe 12.5 or so. The '17 Limited gets around 18. The MPG regulations put in place (but now rescinded) really worked!

If you have done a tuneup and eliminated a poor running engine. Try installing a hotter thermostat. I did that to my 03 Expy and the mileage improved.

The two motors are rated 1 MPG different (14/18 and 15/19) 12.5 MPG means engine in poor tune, clogged air filter, something wrong etc.... helpful advice would be to check those items mentioned. We don’t need the govt telling us how much fuel to consume because after all we are buying it.

@cekkk Sell the expedition and get a ford escape instead, otherwise you're driving full sized body on frame SUV that is as aerodynamic as a refrigerator, mpg's should've never been on your list when bought it.... EVER!

Habbibie, did you even read my post? I don't give a damn if it gets 5 miles to the gallon, I'm not driving a little piece of crap. I just want to know why this one gets 3 miles per gallon lower then my three previous expeditions.

Good luck figuring that one out... possibilities are effin endless. Could be clogged cats, dirty or old O2's, dirty air filter, dirty fuel filter, dirty injectors, dirty throttle body, different driving behavior, worn out spark plugs, defective coils, transmission holding gears longer than usual, low air pressure in tires, driving with windows open, idling more, using AC non stop, etc etc etc...

Driving habits are the same, car has less than 40,000 on it. If it was carbureted - - -

There is one major difference. The previous expeditions were driven at 7 to 9000 feet except when we took a trip. This one is in Southern Cal, at around 2000 at our home and lower when we hit the valley. But this is not a carbureted car and I would think the fuel injection should take care of that. And I need to pay $400 for a tune-up on a car with 40000 miles on it
.
But even though we are in Southern Cal, it's real and so the driving conditions are quite similar. No stop lights most of the time, several miles of open road before we hit any traffic at all. And the first three years were in Colorado, and the mileage sucked there, as well. But since it was my wife's, I did not notice until she mentioned it

Hotter = higher opening temp?

What temp did you go with?

Welcome to CA /// case closed.

Cali-spec "gas", EVEN in the few rare cases it's actually a straight petroleum product and not E10-E15, is characterized by two renowned traits:

1) it's legally obligated to be different from the other 49 states

2) whenever they forcibly switch summer and winter blends, it always gets worse each time (in both directions)

PPS and if it IS a CA truck, it's not actually the same truck, not exactly

There's such a thing as a "49 state emissions vehicle" if you look up VINs.... guess what the other 1 state with the separate spec is.

Yes, it was a higher operating temp.

I don't remember the exact temp. but believe it was 15 degrees hotter than a standard temp thermostat.

I'm getting about one and a half mile increase per gallon. I was surprised.

I thought of that as I wrote it. What I meant was the type of driving, mostly Highway and Suburban speeds, usually DW driving on the slow side

And initial post failed to cite the last 18 or 19 months at the lower altitude.

I also failed to note that it has had careful routine servicing by good Outlets, not Walmart type. And it has had this poor mileage for a along time if not since new. Just really not a big thing but it was curious as to what the causes might be.

I’d check the air filter first, easy to pull the top of the box..... you’d be surprised how much a dirty filter can drop mileage....ALOT! should be changed every 30,000 miles by then they are pretty plugged.

Not necessarily true. Apparently, some people have a hard time figuring out which bathroom to use. Its not a stretch that these folks need to be told which car to drive.

Maybe it’s safer some don’t drive...

Habbibie makes the most sense! I didn't even bother reading the last 10 posts. Depending on rims you have, alignment, two or four wheel, all the tune related crap, these heavy vehicles will be all over the map on mileage. Habbibie is the reining champ at around 7, I come in at 9-10 city, and one guy said his first edition got 20 in town, with the 5.4 and four wheel drive. Yeah right. Our gas prices are $4.00 and higher in San Francisco. Just drive it, enjoy it, cause Mr Donald will figure a way to screw things up even worse, look what he made Harley Davidson do. Building their Bikes in Asia, and laying off 250 workers here!

I know we talk on alot of stuff amd agree usually, but what does Trump have to do with gas prices? Ironic, when George was president and gas prices were high they blamed it on he was getting kick backs since he was from Texas, yet when Obama was president and gas prices were still high they said it was cause of a stable economy... But, when they dropped to $2/gallon it was cause of record low prices.

Why does everyone blame the Republicans for problems, but the Democrats get a pass?
