I have a 2002 ford expedition that quit running on the interstate last week. I had it towed to the dealership and they said it needs a new engine that will cost me around 6500$. I was not expecting this...needless to say is it worth the cost of the repair?? Do you think I can get it repaired for less somewhere else? Can I sale it in the condition its in and would I even get anything for it?? Help please!!

Thanks
Jeannie

for $6500...that could be your down payment on a new one. or you can buy another one with a decent engine it. unless your ballin' and got it like that...i'd part the truck out

what did they say was wrong with the engine? if you had to repair it, you would be better off buying another used one for less than that, and using the other one for parts, or part that one out.

For $6500, I would say it's not worth repairing it, but a good independent mechanic would be cheaper (as long as you find a good one). It is probably worth around $10K. But if you love the vehicle, it may be something to consider. I would ask them EXACTLY what is wrong with the engine. How did it stop running? Did it suddenly lock up? If you were low on oil, it's toast. If you can provide more details, we may be able to help you a bit more. Good luck.

"part it out" means to A) salvage the good usable parts from one vehicle on put on another vehicle that needs it...and B) took off salvageable parts and sell them i.e. sell on ebay, sell to junk yard, regular add in PARTS FOR SELL

someone may correct if i'm wrong...

nope, that pretty much sums it up. find out why it "needs to be replaced" and let us know. like said above, we may be able to help you. as for parting your stuff out, you could find another expy that the interior may not be that great and just trade it all out for the interior you have now. then sell the whole truck (the one not running) to a junkyard or for parts.

This is what happened on our end...
We had previously had a problem with the egr valve(I think thats what its called) and a mechanic where we lived before we moved here said it needed to be cleaned out that it was clogged up with black dirt. They did the repair. A few months later we started having the same problems again with the egr,..sluggish accelerating, rattle sound so we were going to take it to the dealership to have them look at it only before we got a chance to the low oil light came on when he was driving it and all of a sudden it just shut off in mid traffic on the interstate. I will talk to the dealership Tues and get more details...all he said is that there was metal in the oil which means the bearings are shot. Thanks for your help guys!!

As mentioned, there are mechanics and shops that will put in another motor for you for 1/3 of the price they quoted you. Thats insane.
