well... Ive realized im not as young and obnoxious as i used to be. i installed a 3" si/so stock piping flowmaster 40. It sounds awesome but it drones like a motherf#($er... the wife doesn't seem to mind it but you only get really bad droning around 2k rpm which is around 70mph and any out of town trips I drive. The weird thing is the extremely loud droning frequencies are only heard sitting in the drivers seat. Ive sat in the back and passenger front and virtually no droning... just in the driver seat. the wife can confirm that so i know im not crazy. what can i do to get it to stop? has anyone else had this?

Are you still running cats? If not adding them back might help. Or you can add a resonator. That might be cheaper than a new muffler.

i only have 2 cats.. one on each manifold side before the y pipe thats it and i cut out the stock muffler so i know the system was stock before me. if i were to do a resonator would it be before or after the muffler? not really opposed to switching mufflers either ive got a 03 chev 5.3 ext cab 4x4 work truck that i can throw the flow on. guess its not the droning that bothers me its the not bieng able to crank the music to mask it due to a 3yr old in the back and my wife wants to "talk" the whole trip so all I hear is "droning"... lol

Just out of curiosity, are all stock/OEM mounts being used for your exhaust system, thus no metal-to-metal contact anywhere?

If your rig is not under coated, you could also try that route as well as the self-stick sound-deadening products.

Mine is same way. Can only be heard in Drivers seat. Its weird. A buddy that always rides with me was lookin to buy a SUV. So I let him drive mine and he asked if I got a new exhaust put on. And I realized in the passenger seat it sounds stock.

Do a search on Hemholtz or 1/4 wave resonator.

I had some installed and they work well for the rpm range they are tuned for. Would have to be custom fabricated though. For a single in and out I would assume you only need one.

Never heard of that muffler, but always nice to try things. I went from a flowmaster to a dynomax ultraflow on my jeep KJ and while the dynomax didnt sound as nice (closer to stock but still good) it had zero drone. If I ever need to replace my exhaust Ill be putting one of these on my truck the first time. Plus it seemed to perform better then the flowmaster.

Same thing as the tubes coming off the stock intake pipe. Helps improve velocity quite a bit and is basically designed to improve function during the pulsing when the valves close. The side effect is muffling sound and in turn makes all the lamens think they are only for sound and hurt performance when they actually improve it over straight pipes. Now forced induction is a whole diff'nt animal. :drool2:

Yep... Its like a shock absorber for sound waves. It smooths out the pressure waves in the range it is tuned for, all without interrupting the exhaust flow (back pressure).

well.. finally finished the muff swap. i like it better has a deeper tone kinda like an old school rod. no cracks, pops, or tingy noises like the flowmaster. its nice and smooth and not as loud, but i like it. wails with the skinny pedal and quiet cruizing. there is some droning but not as near as bad as the flowmaster. i can actually hold a conversation with myself without yelling..hahaha... i would recomend this Flowtech Afterburner 3" si/so. got it for $46 to my door from amazon. now i just have to find time to throw the flowmaster on the work truck... i can crank the radio for that.lol
