need help with a buddy's e-350

a friend of mine has a e-350 and it wont start due to the shifter not being in the right position.it is a column shifter.on the dash it says its in park but everytime he goes to start it,it wont start until he wiggles it or hold it all the way up then it will crank,i know 4 a fact that most modern cars wont start unless the vehicle is in park or neutral.

anything on how to go about diagnose the issue??thanks in advance

There is a button type sensor in the column. As far as I know they can be "Adjusted". take the column apart and follow the wires. Good luck.
