Hey guys. I'm new to this forum thing so I'll try to figure it out but I have a 98 expedition that I bought a while back. It started to do like a stutter goin down the highway when it comes to a incline or something. It kinda feels like its trying to down shift but can't make up its mind. It only does it when it's in overdrive. If you turn the overdrive off it stops. It dont do it all the time but once is to much in my book and it also seems like its slipping when you put it in awd but not 4 high or low. If anyone can help it would be great

the stuttering especially when you put it out of OD it goes away because the engine goes into a different power band.... is a low grade miss from the COPs... when is the last time you did a full tune up... almost 2 years ago I chased this exact problem till I did plugs and coils... then finally went away.... since it is a low grade miss... it wont trip the CEL...

When did this start, after you did everything you did to tune it up or before all this extra work was done? I would think to look in the way of torque converter goin bad. Or something internal of the trans. But I would like to know when this started and alitlle more detail as to what is going on.

Ok my wife bought it a few weeks ago and a few days after it she said it was skipping so I called the guy she bought it from and said it needed a good tune up do I bought new plugs and 7 coil packs was all the parts store had. So I changed the 3 easy ones on the passenger side and all but the 3rd one on the driverside and the transmission was about a quart low in fluid. After I did all that it stopped and this was last week probly Monday or Tuesday. I changed the other 2 Thursday evening and used an old one for the back one on the driverside. Sunday evening it started again. This is my first ford to ever work on so I don't. I much about em at all. Especially these newer ones.

Ok so the latest update on the skipping in overdrive. Now it's doin it all the time in all gears and it shows #4 misfire and I just changed that coil pack and plug today. Any reason why it's still misfiring??

Yes it's misfiring. Like a older model truck with a bad plug wire. Sittin at idle and goin down the road. It'll clear up for a minute then goes rite back to doin it again. I've changed every coil pack and plug and it's showing misfire on #4 and I just changed it today again. It ran good for about an hour and then went right back to doin it again.

Have you done a check of the plug tip and see what it looks like at #4 and or done a compression check at that cylinder or all for that matter?

If the compression was bad wouldn't it be blowin oil or smokin some though?? And I changed the plug and swapped a different coil pack to it this morning and it's not as bad but it's still doin it. I really don't understand this thing. It'll run good for a while and then it'll start skipping again.

Check the wires from the connector to where it goes into the harness. if the signal wire[-] from the pcm is worn through and shorted it will be ok for a while after you replace the coil then it will get shorted again and it will misfire. usually this blows the coil also.

Are you getting a check engine light or "Engine" lighting up on the dash when
this happens?
I've had issues with coil packs in the past, in fact, I've had issues right after installing them, and had to
purchase a couple of new ones to replace the faulty ones.

I just noticed yesterday that the previous owner had replaced the factory plug with a new one that plugs into the coil. The plug it's self looks ok but the wires where they are spliced together look burnt a little bit. I'm gonna try to cut em off and resplice em and see what happens then. That's the only thing I've seen that may be causing it. Other than that everything else looks fine.

Ok so I cut and reconnected the wires to the coil plug with a new coil pack and it's still skipping at low rpms in overdrive when you gas on it like at an incline or something. Any thoughts or suggestions.
