My wife was traveling this week and her rental got broken into and stuff got stolen, including her fob key for the truck. This one is the keyless entry kind. Truck also has the factory remote start

What's my best option to get this fixed? Going to the dealer or is it possible to get a new fob from elsewhere and program it myself?

As long as you have an admin key, you can program them yourself. I can’t remember the technique exactly, I did it on my F-150 when I added factory remote start to it.
My wife got two key fobs with her truck and neither of the keys was even cut.

I recommend going to the dealer. Bring all the keys you have, say you got a key stolen and remove all other keys from the system that are not present then ask for the printout that all other keys have had removed access.
If you are really concerned about future theft then also request the blades to be re-keyed.

Thanks for the responses. @AllBoostNoEco , what's an admin key? I still have one of the two original keys/fobs would one of these be an admin key? Thanks.

It’s basically an unrestricted key, which is how they come from the factory. If you’ve never setup a MyKey key, then it’s an admin key.
Sometimes people buy used trucks and get one key that turns out to have been programmed as a MyKey, and they can’t be used to program new keys. All the old keys have to be cleared out via programming (though FORScan works) and all-new keys programmed in.

ETA: After some more reading, it seems I forgot that the self-programming of new keys requires TWO keys, not just one. If you only have one, you have to go to the dealer or do it via FORScan. I apologize for the misinformation, it was 2014 when I did it and I did not remember the entire process.

Yeah. So talked to the dealership and confirmed I need the two original keys to program a third unless I go to them. Sigh. So ordered a new key and booked an appointment for Friday to get everything setup.
