a good alarm with a starter interrupt relay...my truck is set up so that when the alarm is triggered the starter is disabled. This wouldnt be much of a help if someone wanted to steal it with a flatbed but it's better than nothing

I have full coverage on my 2000 through AAA and I pay $365.00 for six months....as far as a pay out, make sure you have lots of pictures showing the condition inside and out...you more apt to get more if they see what they are paying for. This I know from experience. Remember they have to settle with you, you dont settle with them.

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone. My insurance company is Geico -- and I added the Expedition through the Geico website and full coverage wasn't an option. I'll call them and check it out. Sorry for jumping to conclusions that we all only carried liability coverage...

Some really good ideas above. Thanks to everyone that responded with one. Keep them coming. Especially interested in any of the low-buck measures (hidden toggle to kill the ignition/fuel supply). Of course, that doesn't prevent it from being towed/flat bedded away.

A big chain around the axle locked with a big padlock to a eyelet cemented in the ground a foot deep will stop and flatbed or tow truck...

Kill switch. That or get a gps capable prepaid phone. Put $10 on it and always keep it charged under the seat.

Update: Meant to come back to this and let you guys know I called Geico and have had full coverage on the '01 Expedition for about four months now. Hopefully she'll stay put, as to me, this truck is worth 5x more to me than the $4500 I paid for her.

I'm still looking at ways to keep her from being driven away. Open to all simple (and yea, realistic -- i.e. no CHL armed buddies, rattlesnakes or gators hiding in back) ways to fix this.

For example, when the horn fuse blew the other day (wrecking yard horn install must've popped it), I tried to pull the truck back in the driveway -- and she wouldn't move forward in drive. Reverse was fine, but the OD light on the stalk was blinking and she wouldn't move. Replaced the fuse and she ran just fine (check engine light is still on...).

I need to investigate that circuit as well as the fuel pump circuit...kill those with a switch and the truck isn't going anywhere under it's own power.

Used to be able to find manual hydraulic locks that one would install into the brake line.

Worked kind of like a line lock; a guy would mash the brake pedal, turn the key and then walkaway. The valve would hold the pressure in the brakes lines making it impossible to simply drive away.

The only way to defeat this would be to destroy the lock/valve which would mean you then had no brakes at all...

IDK if they are still out there though, I couldn't find one the last time I looked.

you could try finding an "Auto Taser", though they've been discontinued for many years now:

or hide a set of train horns under the front seats and connect their valve to the alarm system.

:D
