hey guys haven't posted in awhile. sorry if this has been asked in another thread im just at work and short on time to search. anyway I have a 99 expy eddie bauer 5.4 108k. Headgaskets have gone bad. Is it easier to replace the motor or fix the existing head gaskets?? also if I do a different motor does it make sense to replace the head gaskets before its put it and if so, what does a kit cost?? I was told that it was a headgasket by one shop. the issue is that when I shut the truck off it smokes like crazy from the right side down onto the exhaust pipe. thought maybe it was rear main seal but they said head gasket. oil isn't really milky either. kinda lost. any input would help thanks!

Sounds to me like they suspect the head gasket is leaking either oil or coolant outside of the block. This will not necessarily cause any mixing of fluids or cause driveability concerns but obviously is a nuisance.

I would try and confirm its coming from the head gasket and not valve cover if it is oil because it would suck to go through all the trouble of replacing engine or head gasket if its just leaky valve cover.

As far as replacing head gasket or motor you will likely hear different opinions. I would prefer to pull the motor to replace head gasket due to ease of access with the overhead cam motor.

I does happen as far as leaky head gaskets on the 5.4's but don't know that it is common enough to warrant replacing head gaskets unnecessarily if you so chose a replacement motor.

Problem with replacement motors unless it is a remanufactured one with warranty is the condition is unknown.

You may also consider checking the torque on the head bolts if you replace the valve cover gaskets.
