Just bought a 06, 5.4L Trruck has 100k on it, runs and drives good, 2 days after I got it, it started ticking, like it has a small exh leak, then it throws a CEL, code says intake cam timing full advance, any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Side note, the ABS light came on same day?
wondering if I got slightly screwed, lol

Probably needs a timing job, likely bought a truck with bad camphasers.

Possible the VCT solonoids are sticking timing at full advance as well if it’s shaking when you come to a stop.

Sorry Barry, your obviously new here, but yeah the owner knew about his cam phaser problem. He somehow masked it long enough to sell it to you. Are you going to do the work or a shop? Unfortunately 05,06 are the first 2 and most problematic years. Have a shop verify that it is in fact internal, and not something else. As far as the ABS light popping on, that's a different issue, that you'll have to address.

I'll be fixing it myself, Mechanic by trade, but switched to heavy equipment 15 years ago, but anyhow. It looks the the valve covers have been off, new grommets new plug boots, how would you verify if it's internal, I've been told the wrong oil can cause the sol's to stick? and how could he have masked it to sell it? it runs perfect, lot's of power, and smooth as hell when you stop.
Thank You

and yea the abs was just the kicker I didn't need,,LOL

I don't know how he could mask a phaser noise. You might try changing the cam solenoids. Their easy to replace, and fairly cheap. Start with the one for that cam, you might get lucky. What happens with the cam advance/retard phasers is the gasket behind the phasers leaks, and loses oil pressure to it. Is their any warranty on this vehicle? Or is it the usual buyer beware?

No, sold as is, and it's giving me a code for both banks, May just open it up and do the chains, and ph sprockets, if replacing the sol's don't clear it up, thank you for your input,. ???would to heavy of an oil cause this?
and will it hurt to drive it for a while till I get the time to tear into it?
It runs perfect now, just knowing there is an issue worries me a bit.
Thank you

You can drive it for a bit, but phasers seem to take a quick turn. You can try the thinner oil,5w30, if it doesn't help, drain it into a clean pan, and reuse it, if the mileage is low, why not? I've reused oil and coolant, that were barely used. Use a stethoscope or thin screwdriver, and narrow down the noise. You'll hear it sounding like a diesel from front cover if their bad usually. Plenty of videos online to help narrow it down.

Let us know what you find. Be careful with the stethoscope around front. But your a pro, so you know that already. If not already in there. Might want to pop in a Ford or other high flow oil filter. The cheaper ones don't help on 3 valve motors.
