Hey folks I am new to ford's as I have always been a Chevy or a Honda guy. I am looking for some performance gains that will gain me better fuel economy. I have a 2004 expedition Eddie Bauer with bone stock 5.4 triton. I am getting 14 in town and 17 Hwy. We log alot of miles and since a cng conversion is not in the cards at this time I am wanting to get the most bang for my buck. Probably want to do exhaust, intake, plugs and wires and maybe a tuner but I have no idea who is the right companies to go thru. I don't have extra time or money to waste on trial and error. Please let me know what you guys have done to boost performance and mpg. Thanks.

Soft foot is your best friend, the way you drive will have more effect then other stuff that you spend money on to gain MPG.

Wow... that's really good MPG.

Most of what you listed are a waste of money, other than the plugs and COPs.
Which are maintenance items. What mileage is your truck? You need to do Plugs at 100K, may be sooner, COPs, if you are having some miss fires.

Do regular tune ups, inflate tires correctly and check often.

And read up on Phasers, and use the correct oil weight recommended.

Don't believe in CAI's, the most wasted cash in the automotive industry.

Welcome to the forum.

I disagree, I had a definitely noticeable power gain with my k&n fipk and although it wasn't nearly what the manufacturer claimed I did see a slight increase in mpg's. But like 6K said it depends in the lead level in your foot, which in my case is probably why I didn't see the mgp gain I should have lol. My intake also gave my exhaust a much more aggressive sound than it had already, well worth the cash to me but that's just my 2¢.

Besides cai's are far from the MOST wasted money in the auto industry......Don't forget things like this little gem

And they still make these things!

The question is if for little MPG gains if there is any is recouped over the life of your truck. Unlikely and I implore you can not prove it. Remember, more power means more gas used up. Be it, better exhaust, intake or CAI. There are plenty of people who have tested these claims and it is neither proven nor other wise.

I would rather spend my 2 grand on a 20 tanks of gas than spend it on exhaust/intake system.

My 2 cents.
You got cash burning a hole in your pocket,? go for it.

Cheers

I'm getting 17 in town and 19 highway with a gotts mod, SCt tuner, and a cat back.
Mine's 4wd so if yours is 2wd it might do a little better. I think I would get over 20 on the highway if we didn't have so many elevation changes in the west.

Properly flowing exhaust allows the motor to breathe better. And while more air means more fuel, a higher power to fuel used ratio will mean better fuel economy in the long run. It's not how much you burn, but how well you extract the energy from what is burning. Hence the reason boosted and diesel applications get better mileage.
