I have a 1999 Expedition with the tronsponder key and a separate fob and I was wondering if the new key with the buttons right on it would work. I called Ford and they said the didn't know if the computer would except it. Anybody know?

You can add up to like 8 key fobs to your truck. There is a procedure in the manual on how to program the new key fobs. Its not hard but you have to make sure to program them all at the same time. Initiating the computer to accept new key fobs erases the old ones so make sure you relink the old one along with any you add. This does not work for adding additional keys. If you only have one you have to go to a dealer. I lost my second key and the only way to program a new one is to have the dealer reprogram the computer.

You can also get a locksmith to program keys and may be less that a dealer I had 2 keys programed for a cost under $50.00 at a locksmith that does automotive. I only had one original key and you need 2 original keys for the 99 and up in order to program one yourself.

As for the key that has a FOB attached I have seen a post on here about that but am not sure if it was compatible with the 99

Also there was a post on here today from someone that was trying to do that on his expy he even had a video posted and he was unsuccessful

I'm not sure if the new style key with the buttons built in it are compatible with the old style key / fob combination. I have purchased two new fobs off ebay for my Expy and they came with instructions. Like was mentioned, you have to program them at the same time because the old fob signal will no longer work unless you reprogram it. Since it worked, I bought extras for all my other cars too.

I just tried an extra transponder key I have for my 09 Lincoln (same as for all newer Fords) but it doesn't fit all the way into the ignition of the Expy. The key cut is the same, but the plastic part with the buttons is too thick to fit into the shroud that surrounds the ignition switch. The Expy keys are thinner, so they fit all the way in. I don't think your plan would work even if the electronics were compatible.

I'm 90% sure that you can't use newer style keys (remotes) on the older vehicles.
There used to be an ebay seller that had a key that allowed you to put the guts from your external fob inside it.

I used to have the 'switchblade' key for my truck. The apparently make a version with a built in remote.

I found these. I think you have to move your circuit boards from your remote into these shells.

I don't think those keys will fit either Andy, if the 99 has the same ignition lock as the 00 - 02. The shroud prevents those wider keys from fitting all the way inside the cylinder:

The kid at my local Ace Hardware will provide, cut, and program a new key, if I have only one original key, for $68.
