Looking at buying a new to me EL. I've been looking over the site for the past few weeks. I can't seem to figure out the towing specs. I am currently looking at a 2009 XLT. It is out of town so I can't look at it, I only can ask questions. Can anyone explain to me what towing package this truck has? I looked on Ford ETIS and it says Trailer Tow Prep Pack. What is that? How much weight can I tow with that? On one vin lookup site it says the truck has a class IV hitch. Is this correct? Does it have the HD package? Is there a difference in the hitches in the HD package and standard package? Difference in towing capacity? the vin is 1FMFK16569EB07031. Thanks for all the help. Looking forward to the move from Chevy.

This was all much easier before Ford removed the ability to view the Moroney sticker.

Some info in a previous thread here regarding the tow prep package.

As per the '09 Expedition brochure, the Heavy Duty tow packages consists of:

Class IV hitch receiver, 4- and 7-pin connectors, heavy-duty
auxiliary transmission oil cooler, heavy-duty radiator and
electronic brake wiring kit (Available on XLT and Eddie Bauer)

Call the seller up and ask for pics of the hitch connector (to check connector type) and a close-up of the radiator/grill (to see if there is a tranny cooler mounted to the radiator).

So I would take it that if it doesn't have the 7 pin it doesn't have the HD package or a class IV hitch. Does that mean it would only have a 4 pin and class III? Can you have a 7 pin but not a HD package? And not a class IV hitch? Sorry for repetitive questions. Just need to be sure I buy the right expy. I sometime tow 7000-8000 pounds.

If it does not have a 7-pin connector, it does not have the HD towing package. However, if it does have a 7-pin connector it does not necessarily mean it has the HD tow package. Occasionally dealers or previous owners will upgrade single components.

Thanks for that ManUp. I think this will be my last question. If it doesn't come with the HD package, does it still have the class IV hitch. That's one thing i can't seem to find info on. I can always add a 7 pin and trans cooler.

Class III hitch was standard in '09. Class IV would had to have been added as some type of optional package. Here is the '09 towing guide from Ford. Scroll to page 23 for the Expedition.
