Hey I am looking at getting an expedition mainly due to needing a 3rd row seating. I prefer something years 2000+, is there a big difference between 2002 and 2003 as far as reliability? Is there anything a first time expedition buyer should know?

The 2003 was the first year of the Gen 2 Expedition. I had one and had to replace the trans at 70k miles. Light duty with minimal towing at no more than 7500 pounds trailer weight.
I had a 2005 after that and it was much better.

2003s to present have the fold flat 3rd row seating which is best...if u get anything else 97-02 u will have to remove the seat when u need more cargo area or flat space...everyone else followed ford/Lincoln with the fold flat concept

that first generation remains unmatched in reliability, though the difference is not major, so long as you stay with the 2V engine. having said that, the 2nd gen has major improvements. Although the new drive-train and suspension have advantages, a major con is that they are difficult to upgrade - the new IRS suspension is very difficult to lift simply, and I am very skeptical of the thin axles, though I have not actually heard of any snapping.
IMO. YMMV.

The 1st gen while reliable aren't flexible in terms of interior space like others have mentioned, needing to remove 3rd row to get cargo space when needed. The interior IMO, is also severely dated. My in laws used to have a 2000 and even 10 years ago it really showed its age inside. Most vehicles from the area in the same boat however. 2nd and 3rd row seat comfort leaves a lot to be desired in the 1st gen as well.

Those 3 things are primarily why Iooked for an 03+, the extra room in the back and fold flat option has proven to be a great combo when each is needed. The 2v motor is available through 2004, 05 is when the 3v came along. There are plenty of "What to look for when buying" threads in the forum. I'd suggest reading some, perhaps a YouTube video or three that shows you the common issues/potential failures so you actually know what to look for.
