Can't explain it either but the purple wire has been known to cause the same problems and has been documented many times on the forum You haven't solved the problem yet so it would be worth while to check

khpony, just a suggestion, run new grounds for the cluster as a test. You can use bell wire if you have any. Solder one end to the board and the other a crimp terminal to chassis ground.

If the problem vanishes it is the connectors or the harness.

Well I let it set overnight after resetting the solder connections on the board. The display has been working ever since. I believe that did the trick. Thanks to everyone that provided assistance. That's what makes this forum so valuable.
