Well I have a 2005 Expedition 4x4. When I bought this in March I came to this website to find out what to look for before stepped up to the pump. Well just like was talked about the 4x4 would not go to 4HI or 4Lo. I used it as a buying point for a lower price which also worked. when I got home I tapped it with a hammer and it worked like new. Well 4 months later I am having to tap it with a hammer at least once a week. If I don't cycle the switch at least daily I have to tap it. I had a friend at a Ford dealer tell me that the shift motor was replaced 2 years ago so I would think it would not need a hammer.
Is there anyone out there that can help me out on what to do. I am getting tired of crawling under it just to use the 4wd

I would pull the connection apart and look for corrosion clean and use dielectric grease

Honestly I haven't heard of guys having to tap the transfer case to get it to work again. I agree with JUST4FUN. Start off small and work up. Are you tapping the shift motor itself or the transfer case?

I have been tapping the motor itself, not where the gear is and not the transfer case, just the motor. I tapped on it Friday as I was changing oil and that afternoon NO HI or LO. The part that floors me is that I can put it in
A4WD and spin the rear the front locks in like it is suppose too.

Well the A4WD in the 1st gens operated through a magnetic clutch. This is not run by the shift motor, but rather an electro-magnet. The 4x4 high and low is run by mechanical means, which is operated by the motor. The transfer case mechanically locks into 4x4 in these settings. That is most likely why you still get A4WD.
