odd egr like problem

another newbie here!!! 98 eb 5.4 My problem is that when I put the old girl in reverse, it sounds like typical egr problems ( knock knock diesel and then sometimes die. if it stays running for more than 4 or 5 seconds, then its fine. problem is non existant cold. (closed loop) Otherwise, for a rig with over 212000 miles, she runs pretty good!! Any suggestions???

Egr

Check out the EGR system. Do a smoke test see if comes out the EGR. What's the EGR look like? Should still have its black paint and part# still. Rusty and old looking especially and if its original with 212k might be tired? How's the tube look? Smooth or rusty? Usually a smooth tube you should not have a leak. On the other hand rusty might have pin holes. Follow the tube down to exhaust manifold and inspect it. This condition would be more on F-150 but take a look anyway. Take left front tire off (unless you can squeeze in there). Look through the service opening and find the tube. Look at the tube and the nut that connects it to the manifold. Does it look like nut or more like crown or castle with points on top. If it looks like a castle more than likely there's your leak.

Exhaust leak test:

Kind of hard to do it on this truck but if you can take a thin piece of cardboard (cereal box) run it along tubes and manifolds if it vibrates there's a leak in that area. There's so much stuff in the engine bay kind of difficult but can be done.

will try all of that as time permits, but why only in reverse???

replaced the egr valve for s&g's changed nothing. egr tube appears to be good. cant seem to find any leaks. gonna spend a little quality time with her tomorrow.....

First thing that comes to mind is the torque converter clutch is locking up.

I thought about that, cause every now and then, when going from drive to park, you can hear a stumble ( for lack of a better word) any suggestions on how to check for that?? would that show up on a live data scan??

The higher end scanners should be able to monitor the trans if not actuate the solenoids.
