Just bought a viar onboard air system and trying to figure out where to mount the 2.5 gallon tank and compressor on my 98 expedition 4x4. Anybody done this before that can give me some ideas. really not wanting to mount it in the cargo area but that is the only place i see fit.

Well your options are very limited. What are the dimensions of the tank?

Somewhere under the truck is going to be the obvious alternative solution (if any). If I were you, I would crawl under there with the tank and see if I could find a safe place to mount it if the thing's not too big.

Also, hiding it in the bumper wouldn't seem like such a good idea...we're talking about a tank full of compressed air.

on-board air

i looked underneath and the only spot that the tank seems to fit is on the outside of the frame right behind the front tires but i don't want things flying off the tire and hitting the tank.

98exped4x4, pretty much it is behind the front tires or you are going to end up getting rid of the spare tire and mounting the tank there. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The only other option is to get some 6" schedule 80 tubing and make your own tank. That will be way more wall thickness than you need so, even with rocks hitting the tank or someone T-boning the truck, the tank is going to remain intact. Then all you have to worry about is someone knocking off the port in the tank. Even then, you are only looking at a bit of noise, that's it. Then you can mount the tank to the frame rail and call it good. This is my plan if I get my new F-150. That way I can have about 10 gallons of air onboard and still not use up any of the bed space.

just for reference, using 6" pipe that is 5' long is going to result in a tank that is just over 5 gallons in size.

just an update on this i didn't like listening to the compressor inside when it kicked on so i made brackets and mounted t behind the front bumper. With making the brackets i also made a skiplate for the front since there wasn't one on my exped. everything came out nice just waiting on the weather so i can finish running my air line to the rear for a quick disconnect.

i will get pics up tomorrow whenthe wife gets home from work with the exped. the on-board air also came with a guage to monitor pressure in the tank so i used a universal pillar pod to mount it and also a trans temp guage. don't like the look of the pillar pod but its all i could find at the time. if anybody knows where to get a full pillar pod replacement that will hold to guages please let me know.

I haven't used this pillar mount but it looks good and may be what you're looking for.

This pillar is actually pretty good, the only thing is it dosn't have the factory screw locations to hold it in place the grab bar screws are in the middle of a gauge.

All I did was run a single self tapping screw thru the top and it is hard to notice after painting the head to match. Unfortunatly I do not have a pic of the screw and I have since takin the pillar out for the time being because the glow shift gauges suck A$$, but the pillar is good. Once I can get a good set of Autometer gauges the pillar will be going back in.
