Outer window trim

One of the outer window trim pieces on my 03 Expy is flaking/fading. I'm not sure what the material is made of. Its the piece directly under the windows (black trim). Wonder if I can strip it down & paint it? Anybody else have this problem?

yulp...stealership told me $400 for the new piece since it has the keypad...he show'd me and its all one piece...i plan on getting mine painted to fix that prob

Yea, just sand, prime, base coat black, and clear. Or, if you want it all in a matte finished, just sand, and paint with trim paint.
